paying to move up here and go to fisher, emmanuel, or lesley is an incredibly massive waste of money
no disrespect to those schools but they simply are not worth moving for

boston is an upper mid tier city with a luxury pricetag
grew up here and have never left but the costs are really weighing on the benefits nowadays

dont forget heating costs. coming from alabama youre probably going to crank up the heat during the winter and you will be paying quite a bit for that

because city land is far smaller than most other cities in the country, we are like the 8th biggest metro
i never said that i am against building housing, just that a blanket “build” policy is not conducive to building neighborhoods and communities. the seaport is a perfect example of building soulless neighborhoods
take care of boston residents before enticing more and more biotech and life science startups here

my point being we dont need to be a massive metropolis city
we are and can be a good mid sized city, we dont need to be continually outpacing our housing stock by bringing in high paying tech jobs and squeezing out the middle class

its an understandable argument
most people on here didnt grow up here and dont have the same reference for their neighborhood as maybe you and i did, they just want their rent to go down, which is fair
i just dislike the notion around here sometimes that we need to become this super high density city for…some reason

at the risk of being exiled from this group i am probably a little bit more “nimby” than most on this page, in the sense that i dont think we need to scramble to turn boston into a metropolis like new york but…this is a little ridiculous
shawmut is one of the least used stations and there really is no reason an auto body shops needs to be on a parcel literally next to t property
as for neighborhood character, theres a pretty large apartment building right on the corner of melbourne st and plenty along washington st/talbot, why are those fine but not this?
its too bad we couldnt reroute the tracks and place a station right in codman instead of nestled between million dollar homes on melville and ashmont hill

im confused too, a lot of the rhetoric around police reform in 2020 was trying to bring the police closer to the community they serve and not being an occupying force

i agree, but thats more of an issue with the city itself. i think the city could do some unique things to remedy it like significant homebuyer rebates for city workers who sign an agreement to stay for a period of time or some variation of that
we are kind of at a perfect storm with the city becoming prohibitively expensive for middle class workers while also national opinion is steering potentially good candidates away from police as a career. the days of the civil service exams having lines out the door for the cop test are long gone

i think policing is a different beast from teaching or being a 911 dispatcher and officers are expected to be nearby to be able to respond to a major event
i agree with you that they are limiting the talent pool, and i think a provision could be reached to allow people who take the position time to move into the city
i would like my police force to be able to vote in local elections, know and shop at the local businesses and interact with members of the community they police outside of negative or enforcement oriented meetings.

yes i understand youre looking to rent
most of the apartments you found “fitting the criteria” are either scams or landlord specials
it can take upwards of 40 minutes to go 3 stops on public transit nowadays
youre not finding good apartments in the city or close to it for under 2k
