It has been especially bad lately and I don’t know why. I kinda can’t help but think it’s just people paying less and less attn while driving.

I'm on call a lot, and I get called out at night a lot. It's gotten horrible the last couple years. Especially the auto high beams that don't shut off when they are behind someone. Constantly getting blinded in the mirrors.

Kiernanstrat t1_j6rqhdb wrote

Or they just have a newer truck with LED headlights. I get flashed occasionally by people thinking my high-beams are on when they aren't. I feel bad but I also get a kick out of giving them an x-ray with the real high-beams.

Edit: To be clear my truck is completely unaltered. The headlights are that way from the factory.

Edit 2: To be more clear my headlights don't need to be adjusted they are just bright

I'm flashing them with my high-beams. You don't need to be so dramatic.

You don’t need to be a dick, but here we are.

It's a joke dude. I'm not really x-raying anyone don't worry.

imfacemelting t1_j6sk06n wrote

you should bring it to your dealer and have the headlights adjusted. It's terrible, and not your fault of course, but a lot of cars coming off the assembly line do not have properly adjusted lights.

12

Kiernanstrat t1_j6ssx90 wrote

They don't need adjustment they are just bright. The upper bound is below a sedans rear window on level ground.

imfacemelting t1_j6ucw86 wrote

hmm… if you pull up in front of a wall is it a sharp horizontal line where the light ends or is it more diffuse?

3

Kiernanstrat t1_j6ufom4 wrote

Sharp horizontal line. When I flick on the high beams the line just moves up. No change in brightness.

3

ResponsibleExcuse727 t1_j6sjbxy wrote

Your factory headlights need to be adjusted.

Kiernanstrat t1_j6sspqs wrote

No they don't they are just bright. The upper bound is below a sedans rear window on level ground when I am behind them.

ResponsibleExcuse727 t1_j6sxevk wrote

I’m sure that was just your assumption while you were 3ft away from said sedans bumper

Better than assuming there is something wrong with them based on some reddit comments.

Kiernanstrat t1_j6t2cq8 wrote

So every single truck from the factory needs it's headlights adjusted? Is that what you are telling me?

−1

ResponsibleExcuse727 t1_j6t52zz wrote

No, a vast majority do. Also hundreds of thousand of GMCs were recalled due to headlights being too bright. There’s a huge amount of people who raise their trucks and do not adjust them as well.

11

Kiernanstrat t1_j6t5kca wrote

So how do you know I need my headlights adjusted? I do not have a GMC and I have not made any modification to my vehicle.

The multiple occasions you are flashed by oncoming traffic

7

Kiernanstrat t1_j6ta1hx wrote

So then you are assuming based on reddit comments. I think only one of us has "real life experience" when it comes to my vehicle.

A lot of states headlight rules are from pre LED days, so they just say like 55watt max for headlights. But 55watts of LED is a lot more than 55watts of incandescent bulbs, hah. I did recently pick up some retna pealer 5000's from the local junk store, but they were new in box, for $5, with new pigtail wiring harnesses, and they are the right size for my hoopty f550 farm truck, but don't worry, it just gets used on the farm, or to pull neighbors out of the ditch within a mile of my house on our dirt road, hah, hopefully won't peal any retnae, retnas?

DukeOfLizards42 t1_j6rjhww wrote

In some, certainly not all, cases it is the angle the low beams are at coupled with the height of the vehicle. I work with guys that had it changed because they felt bad when people would flash highs

15

RZRPRINCESS t1_j6s3wht wrote

Yes, I had this similar situation with my lifted truck, I had the beams adjusted and no more pissy people flashing at my low beams constantly.

11

OddTry2427 OP t1_j6qcgwy wrote

There is no fine or offense for not shutting them off to oncoming traffic. Some states have it and others do not.

z28camaro1973 t1_j6rm3oj wrote

I'm almost certain that we do have an improper lighting statute that this would fall under. It could also be used as suspicion of drunk driving and be probable cause for a stop.

As for the light bars, most are not DOT approved, and sold as off road only, meaning that anyone using them on road could be cited if caught.

TheTr7nity t1_j6qvlt2 wrote

OddTry2427 OP t1_j6stxfu wrote

Most new cars have a hight cutoff on the low beam. They are bright for sure but majority of the time that's not the issue. Although the auto high beams is a terrible idea.

4

flambeaway t1_j6v2q0w wrote

Height cutoff works well on an infinite flat frictionless plane but in the real world they get in people's eyes all the fucking time.

It was never this bad until I moved to Vermont. Is this how you own the flatlanders?... leave your highs on when going southbound while jerries are coming northbound?

With the help of a friend, i have finally figured out exactly where to move my side mirrors to to send the light back to the little dick fucktard in the giant truck behind me that is 3 inches from my bumper, in a blizzard, with lights like the sun.

Just have your work truck owning buddy get behind your car in his truck. Turn your mirror with the little thingy until he says it's reflecting back at him. I'm sure i dont get it right every time, but im looking at the space along one edge of the mirror while turning the mirror, looking for a gap that i think is the correct positioning. Yes, i hate them this much. ;)

3

VTPeWPeW247 t1_j6wjawm wrote

I completely understand. I feel the hate strongly as well. Usually I just turn my mirrors upwards or outwards so I can’t see a darn thing, turn up the radio and drive as slow and safe as I want too(in the snow). Knowing the guy riding my ass is seconds away from having a breakdown is the cherry on top. It’s usually a green plate behind me, I always assume it’s a kid in a truck his daddy bought him.

2

OddTry2427 OP t1_j6thz6d wrote

You can use them all you want. Just shut them if you see taillights or headlights in front of you.

This morning there were three cars in the oncoming traffic. The middle one high-beamed me (and the vehicle in front of him, plus the two cars behind me). I didn't have my high beams on, but the guy behind me had those "bright" looking lights (I didn't think they were bad at all). So yeah, just high beam everyone when you think one guy has their high beams on (even when they don't).

I still say short range Bluetooth, maybe an app, that will let us say/yell our key phrase "that fucker cut me off." everyone in the area who has the app will now hear what you are saying.

This will reduce a lot of driving issues and only encourage road rage occasionally.

This is not the first post complaining about people keeping their high beams on. Nor is it the first post complaining about ‘bad Vermont drivers’. OP - not sure what you are trying to accomplish, but posting here isn’t going to change anything. How about attending your local town meeting and bringing it up there ? All I see posts like this doing is just bringing more negativity to this subreddit.

Previous posts :

OddTry2427 OP t1_j6rfryv wrote

Just because it's negative or you don't like it doesn't mean some of the offenders arnt seeing this at this very moment. If I can have one person take thier highs off from reading this I've done my part. With a subreddit for a state, you've got to expect both good and bad. This isn't rhappygoluckyvermont.

13

chiahomesteader t1_j6s6avh wrote

Great but just filling this thread with repetitive posts isn’t the way. I doubt anyone reading your post is thinking ‘oh I didn’t realize this was annoying people - next time I’ll be adjusting my habits’.

Most ‘offenders’ don’t care at all and like one poster in this thread posted about ‘X-ray blinding people’ reaffirms my suspicion .

Again, multiple posts whining about the same issue DOES make this whole subreddit seem like all it is doing is being negative. The fact that people are downvoting me shows that a lot of people on this subreddit make it toxic.

That's what this is for. If something is bring joy to us, we want to share it. If something is bringing pain to us, we still want to share it. That's like asking not to keep posting about how beautiful the mountains are because someone's already said it.
