Please please please don't ever call Newark a suburb of NY. Don't get me wrong, we love New York, but we're also proud of our own state and wouldn't want to think of one of our most major city as a suburb for another place.

With that being said, I'd recommend spending a few hours driving around and walking the downtown. If you feel comfortable and happy during that time, maybe you would want to move there. If you feel nervous, and/or uncomfortable, maybe it's not the right place for you.

P.S. Google street view is great, but IMO does a terrible job of getting a places vibes.

$1250/month in Montclair? Not going to happen.

You can't really get anything for that low without living in the ghetto.

You'll probably be paying at least 1900-2000 per month in any decent town after all the fees are added on.

I definitely recommend West/South Orange, and MORRISTOWN/Morris Plains.

To be honest, if you get a good living situation in Madison, take it. It's only 10-15 minutes from Downtown Morristown (which has tons of restaurants, bars and amazing walkable streets)

What is your montly budget?
I'd also check out apartment buildings in plainfield. How long are you willing to commute? Keep in mind travel times at 7-8am are VASTLY longer than travel times lunchtime, late at night, etc. Linden could be 40 minutes away from Plainfield (high school).

I'd recommend looking into apartment buildings in Plainfield too, there's a good amount there, and you'd obviously be close.

Other than living in Plainfield, more good town choices would be North & South Plainfield, Northern Edison, Piscataway, and Colonia (in woodbridge)..

You could try renting a spot at a local flea market one morning. You may have some luck there. A yard sale could also work.

- Selling on platforms like ebay & poshmark require a lot of knowledge about policies and pricing, I wouldn't recommend learning that unless you plan to sell for a long time. It could also take multiple months for things to sell.

There are definitely homes under 600k in North Jersey! (Maybe in less desirable areas, but still there)

"it must be nice to be a Montclair trust fund baby" is clearly an ignorant statement. They should take a visit to Irvington or Camden and we'll see if they still say that.

Interesting that they're posting about troubles finding a house in other places too lol. I guess the grass isn't always greener on the other side.

I hope you're happy with wherever you end up.
NJ may be expensive, but you'll soon realize that NJ has EVERYTHING, and you may miss it when you're gone.
Mountains up northwest, Beaches on the southeast, the most densely populated city in the country, as well as farm-towns with barely any population density.
Traffic may be bad here, but it's not much better in other places in the country with many interesting things to do.

How big of a house are you looking for?
Some towns for you to look into would be Bordentown, Cherry Hill, Burlington, Pennsauken (although not the part of Pennsauken on the Camden border)

Depending on how big of a house you need, your budget is a little bit on the low side, but not completely crazy (north and central jersey prices get much crazier).

Also, the Barrington/Bellmawr area is also nice, but there are a lot more conservatives there compared to most of the state, which is worth noting if that's important to you.

AVOID CAMDEN AT ALL COSTS. There may be some slightly nicer parts to *visit*, but none of it is nice to live in. Please don't get tempted by the really low house prices there, it's not worth it.

Vineland, Bridgeton, and Lindenwold aren't necessarily dangerous, but they are more low income towns.

YES!!! I made a post about Plainfield a few weeks ago, and every was talking like it was really small, however when I visited for the first time a few months ago, it seemed really large and nice! However, there are definitely a lot of mentally ill there… a little more than some other NJ cities

A lot of Chinese owned businesses on Rt 27. Look up “loving care pharmacy”, and that’s where the businesses are. I certainly wouldn’t call it a “Chinatown” though

Not sure with those particular locations, but please don’t go to the Princeton location! Parking was impossible, it was a 30 minute wait just to get into the place, I got the most cramped and smallest table ever, and the food was average for the price. Worst restaurant experience of my life. Hope the other locations are better
