I really only know Hoskins from Who Framed Roger Rabbit, but I keep hearing stories about him and think I should look up his larger filmography

He, Dennis Hopper as Koopa and John Leguizamo as Luigi formed a sort of over-the-top trinity.
I still maintain that if they had scrapped everything related to Super Mario Bros and just made it a movie about two New York plumbers fighting the mob like the first half hour, it would have been a much better product.
My understanding is either the writer or director had a movie about alternate dinosaur world and when approached for the mario movie they used it to make their original idea with little to do with mario left
Tim Burton's Batman was still a huge movie on people's mind. The directors wanted a dark-and-gritty Mario movie while the studio wanted a family-friendly movie.

Unironically good movie. Dated a bit but peak soul.
I saw it as a child so I thought it was pretty good. It ended on a little cliff hanger so I kept waiting for the sequel to come out, I didn’t understand that bad movies didn’t get to have wide release sequels
As an aside I dont think ive ever seen any other bigger budget films or show that just completely swerved away from the tone and the story of the source material in the same extreme way. I know in stuff like The Shining and Starship Troopers the directors changed what the stories are about but kept the broad strokes of things in the books, this was more like 'Plumbers and lizards? Say no more'!

I love that he and Hoffman decided to play off of each other as if Hook and Smee were an old gay couple, without informing Spielberg.
He starred in a film called The Long Good Friday that is just amazing. 97% on Rotten Tomatoes.

The film is used in some introductory script writing courses and it's not hard to see why

Watch the long good Friday. The final scene is Hoskins at his absolute finest.
He had surprising range despite looking like an English Danny Devito (and that's not a besmirch on Devito) he did comedy and drama in equal measure and his dramatic roles ranged from cocky mob boss in Long Good Friday to creepy pedophile in Felicia's Journey to somewhat innocent bystander in Mona Lisa. He was equally at home in surreal things Brazil or kitchen sync or pure slapstick like Roger Rabbit. Seemed to be genuinely loved in acting circles too.
If you like martial arts stuff, look up a movie called Unleashed which has Hoskins, Morgan Freeman and Jet Li.
He actually looks more like Al Capone than De Niro.

Bigger movie IMO, Roger Rabbit was a bigger role though. Both were a big part of my childhood.

You absolutely should, someone mentioned “The along Good Friday” but you may want to also check out other movies by Handmade films (George Harrison’s production company he made to finance Life of Brian). He produced some amazing films and a lot of them had Bob Hoskins in them
