If you know of or witness sexual abuse you are obliged to report it, it is usually the law.

Being a priest is no exception. Often crimes of omission are as great or greater than crimes of commission.

Bishop Tobin is an absolute piece of shit and I wish him nothing but the worst in life.

Hopefully this guy is a little more sensible, but he's still a part of an organization that rapes children and covered it up for decades, is the poster child for misogyny, and thinks of homosexuals as less than human, so I don't have my hopes too high.

The way this was handled sends a very clear message to Tobin: GTFO!

The guy equated the LGBTQ community with the 9/11 terrorists. Kinda stopped being interested in his view of a loving Jesus.

Tobin is one of the reasons why I turned away from the Church. Plenty of leadership in the Church do not follow the teachings of Christ: Forgiveness, tolerance and good will toward others.

I remember years ago he spoke out against LGBT community for some parade they were having. It happened to be on the same day as the anniversary mass of my father's death, one of the rare occasions I went to church. I remember sitting in the pew, looking at my sister and saying "I'm only here for Dad."

How can someone preach the Gospel and then turn around and spit out hate like that? I'm not sorry to see hime go. Good riddance.

It's all imagery, the clothes, the rules, the rituals, the "history". They should be paying taxes, stop abusing children, stop moving these people around to avoid legal troubles.

If anyone has any time/ money look into:

I feel like every time the Catholic Church makes news because of something like this or because the bishop spewed more verbal diarrhea we should be highlighting churches who don't judge people and who make a real difference. Like the tiny churches I see providing outreach, help for the homeless, meals, etc. What is the Catholic Church with their so-called huge base in RI doing locally to help people?

Can’t disagree that some people want to lump in all priests in that category and that isn’t fair. There are many good people in the church and Catholicism isn’t a monolith. That being said, the coverup of child sex abuse was institutional, a world-wide problem and spanned decades. People have a right to be upset and feel their trust destroyed and faith shaken. I think all reasonable can agree on that. I’m also in the camp that feels that Bishop Tobin is an asshole and his comments toward the LBGTQ community are petty, disrespectful and untrue. Glad to see him go!

And you don’t want a bishop who is anti-abortion and anti-lgbt? Those are literally catholic beliefs? How do expect a catholic bishop to not be catholic?

Here, I did the work for you as you told OC to do (not even OC) and it still proves you wrong:

https://www.innocentlivesfoundation.org/sexual-misconduct-in-the-classroom-everything-you-need-to-know/#:~:text=The%20report%20concluded%20that%20roughly,their%20K%2D12%20school%20experience.

"The report concluded that roughly 10 percent of students experience sexual misconduct by a teacher at some time during their K-12 school experience."

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Catholic_Church_sex_abuse_cases_in_the_United_States

"The majority of accused priests in the United States (55.7%) had one formal allegation of abuse made against them, 26.4% had two or three allegations, 17.8% had four to nine allegations, and 3.5% had ten or more allegations."[

Let's not forget - the Catholic Church sex scandal has gone on for decades and this is only taking into account the people who have come forward. I am 100% certain both stats are undercounted.

12

the_silent_one1984 t1_ixil62t wrote

You are misreading. It is not saying 55.7% of priests are accused. It is saying out of the accused priests, 55.7% have had one formal allegation.

If you read further down in the article:

"The product of the study, titled the John Jay Report indicated that some 11,000 allegations had been made against 4,392 priests in the USA. This number constituted approximately 4% of the priests who had served during the period covered by the survey (1950–2002)."

So, yes, not denying it's a problem, but it's incorrect to say 55.7% of priests are accused child molesters.

breakmyheart01 t1_ixipet3 wrote

5

JoeFortune1 t1_ixitf2s wrote

One problem with these numbers is that many of the instances in the Church have been covered up. In public schools this is not usually the case with the exception of a winning sports coach who they don’t want to fire. The numbers in the Church are likely higher than the reports

Dud, it's not that hard - you're way more likely to get touched by a priest, family member, or clergy person than you are an outside LGBTQ+ person - The statistics are not on your side, yet your still here peddling BS.

Facts not feelings bro. I know you FEEL like the Catholic Church isn't the problem and I know you have your Catholic church bubble and love to protect child diddlers - but you should really come on over to reality. You sound like a groomer to me tbh.

The mental gymnastics that you Catholics use to try and come to terms with the fact that the church is full of, and run by child rapists is disgusting and abhorrent. > And you don’t want a bishop who is anti-abortion and anti-lgbt? Those are literally catholic beliefs?

There are plenty of ideals that no longer are practiced or preached in the catholic church that were once "catholic beliefs".

  • Working on sunday was once seen as a crime worthy of literal death, as sanctioned in Exodus 35:2.

  • Selling your own daughter into the slave trade is also sanctioned in Exodus 21:7.

  • If a guy sleeps with a woman and claims that she is not a virgin, the mom of the woman needs to bring a "cloth" "proving" that she's a "virgin". If a cloth can be provided and her virginity is proven, the guy is fined 100 sheckles of silver for slander. If no cloth cannot be provided, the woman is to be beat to death by her own neighbors.

> "If, however, the charge is true and no proof of the young woman’s virginity can be found, she shall be brought to the door of her father’s house and there the men of her town shall stone her to death. She has done an outrageous thing in Israel by being promiscuous while still in her father’s house. You must purge the evil from among you." - Dueteronomy 22:19-21

  • If a man rapes a woman, the only punishment should be 50 sheckles of silver paid to the woman's father. The woman is now obligated to marry the man who raped her and is not to divorce her for as long as she lives, as sanctioned in Dueteronomy 22:28

Fuck out of here with the whataboutism in the name of the lord. Just accept the fact that the catholic church has proven to have cherry-picked specific things to preach hate against and which to casually, conveniently ignore. They are as ancient and as vile and as outdated as could possibly be in 2022, and are guilty are far more sins than they profess the LGBT community have committed.
