It’s only mentioned in the photo, but if you are around certain crowds or populations where opiods are common, I highly suggest you carry around Narcan or some other Naloxone medication on you. The Narcan spray in particular is easy and safe to use, and it could potentially save someone’s life.

Here’s more info from the CDC and a few reaources on where to get Naloxone. It’s a prescribed medication but there are ways to obtain it for emergency use as well.

Certain drugstores in Canada will give you a free kit. All you need to do is ask at the pharmacy counter. They say to keep it in your purse or a bag or whatever and not to leave it in the dash of your car .. I happened to mention to the pharmacist about putting it in my glove compartment, but she said the temperature range here (-20⁰C or so in winter and 35⁰C or so in summer) wouldn't be good for the narcan/naloxone and could spoil it.

Not all ODs are heroin, not all people who OD are bad people who deserve to die from their addiction.

People with legitimate prescriptions can develop tolerance, can unintentionally take too many, can lose their prescription and switch to cheaper and more unsafe alternatives.

Purdue and other big pharma corps made bank pushing addictive prescriptions on people for any pain whatsoever. Have some empathy.

Agreed. You have no idea what led this person to misusing drugs in the first place - trauma, abuse, mental health, etc. Anyone can become addicted to substances, it doesn’t make them bad people. The woman in photos has every right to be proud and defiant having overcome so much. Wishing her and her son the best for the future.

Narcan has been made into a political tool in the US. Some counties don't want their personnel to save lives using Narcan. It's good to spread the message that it kept this child from losing their mother. Might help bring public awareness and create a push to keep Narcan as a public safety tool.

I was at a artists’ loft party recently and went to the bathroom and there was a sign in the bathroom with an arrow that said “in case of emergency narcan located here”. I don’t think I’ve ever felt more secure at a party, tbh. You never know what could happen, and it’s nice to know that people are prepared. We (my spouse and I) don’t indulge in hard drug use (just a little weed), but idk what other people are doing behind closed doors.

5

fangirlsqueee t1_jc9rzxl wrote

Yeah. I haven't heard much about trying to restrict Narcan lately. A few years back it was a more prominent talking point. I knew people complaining that we have to spend resources on drug addicts. As if people with addiction issues aren't worth saving or are subhuman.

It's frustrating that the US often treats addiction as a moral failure rather than a medical condition.

I think it's healthy for anyone to celebrate their successes. The idea that you shouldn't get pleasure from external validation is kind of ridiculous, along with a few of the other strictures of the various Anons. People are people, addicts or not

It's all the goddamn same addiction IMO. It's an addiction to happy chemicals in your brain.

I abused alcohol for years but I couldn't give two shits about alcohol really, it was all about the effects.

Abusing a particular type of drug can lead to physical dependence but that's pretty much a side-effect, the addiction is to the happy chemicals.

We can't count on the mainstream to help our people. If you are an addict or former addict who has known the gilded cage of opioid addiction, it is your responsibility to your fellows to obtain AND TRAVEL WITH Narcan. It even comes in a nasal spray so almost no training is required. My state will send you doses for free if you simply sign up online. Make it happen, peeps. We have to take care of our own.

Overdose pictures are helpful. Drugs impact everyone and anyone. I found these types of things to be terrifying and a reason why when presented with opportunities to try certain drugs, I wouldn’t even consider it for a second.

You want to see what a normal kid from the burbs looks like if they get addicted?

It’s like the recreation of DUI accidents that schools used to put on.

The imagery sticks in your head to scare you

jackospades88 t1_jca8y7z wrote

I bet close friends and family reached out, as you'd expect in any situation.

But the millions of people who saw a random video or photo that went viral? I don't think you should expect anything more than "Oh shoot, that sucks. Hope she gets better! Anyway on to the next video!"

3

SeaworthyWide t1_jcab43v wrote

Which is asinine, most of the time your immediate response to Narcan is instant precipitated withdrawal.

You vomit, maybe shit yourself, and have the worst feeling you've ever felt while your opioid receptors are cleaved off and replaced with an antagonist now.

Then there's the secondary reaction some face of "fuck.. I'm not dead and that was my last bag"

It's probably that kind of person who needs the wake up the most.

Unfortunately, it has become a talking point and not a useful tool in a much larger toolbox.

Just like that toolbox the same paramedics have with, ironically, fentanyl and morphine and dilaudid.

They all have their place, but none of them are a one shot fix... At all.

Would you think it was ok to not give the morphine to the guy with a broken leg from a car accident?

😡 "yeah but he knew the risks when he got in that vehicle!"

Most addicts and users are using what they know to get by.

The same idea as to why Jerry with the broken leg didn't flap his arms and fly to work.

Everything in life is inherently dangerous, we should be reducing the harm it causes without flat out prohibition.

It's baffling, tbh. But, in all consideration, maybe they had their reasons to try to stop him, but not like that. My only guess is that they either didn't like the person that needed help and wanted them to od or maybe that person was their friend and voiced their wishes to them of basically a dnr or something. Some of the addicted people I've known have wished for death and would voice that. I'm definitely not condoning the attacker's actions at all and the police were there doing their job. Just thinking of a reason why is all. But then again, maybe the attacker hated cops. Regardless, tragic all around.

G-H-O-S-T t1_jcbdzr1 wrote

That's a messed up outlook on it and idk if you know that.

They're recorded because they have proven once and again that they can't be trusted.
It's their job and they're doing it very wrong.

When they record they catch people in very vulnerable situations that can ruin their lives. They already serve punishment. No need to make it worse by airing it to public if it's no public matter.
