Just found out Frontier is laying the groundwork (no pun intended) for fiber in my town and we should have it fairly soon. While I’m excited to finally have an additional option outside of the typical ISPs in my area, I’ve heard mixed things about Frontier.

Any comments from current Frontier customers, and specifically those with fiber?

We moved over to Frontier Fiber from Cox a couple months ago. So far, it is cheaper and faster without any issues. It is also more reliable than Cox was, as our internet would occasionally drop.

The price is good, but the service is spotty. I routinely need to reset my router every week, and according to their technical support, you need to leave it off for 2 minutes because that's how long their automated software performs a status update for connectivity. Occasionally, I'll get booted from my games on x-box, but I knew what I was buying at the time.

Edit, I have the 500mb fiber for ~$55/ month

Switch from Xfinity 2 months ago to the 1GB fiber plan. Faster and better. No issues.

I switched from comcast to frontier, somewhat reluctantly, concerned about previous experience with frontier in the past. So far, a few months, it has been 100% reliable and I have zero regrets changing. Im outrageously happy! Also no issues with their hardware, but run my own firewall.

No complaints, had an issue with the install a few weeks in and they sent a guy out next day to fix it, both the techs I worked with were super professional. Pretty understandable and I was pleased with how they handled it.

Haven't had any other issues. Definitely more reliable than Cox ever was.

YMMV I get Gigabit for $70/mo

and finally no stupid data caps, so I can actually download games without paying $200 a month total to Cox.

Got it in June, twice, we had issues from their cheap router but besides those times, it has been fine. We were paying 140/120$ before and now it is 40$ for 500mbs

I had Frontier before their “upgrade” and upgraded afterwards and my service has improved and the price droppped. No complaints.

Not Frontier, but we have fiber internet through GoNetSpeed. Highly recommend them if it's available in your area

I have it, and it's fantastic. It was spotty when we first had it installed, but then a technician came out and fixed it and it's never failed us. Reliable, fast, cheaper than Spectrum.

I switched from Comcast to Frontier fiber a month ago.

I do miss not having cable TV but the fiber service has been rock solid and it was very satisfying to tell Comcast that they'd never see another penny of my money.

Yes, you can subscribe to various services to stream TV over the Internet but they're all way too expensive for how little TV I watch.

Installation was kind of a challenge but since then it’s been fine.

Don’t cancel your current service with the expectation you’ll be up and running immediately with Frontier and it should be fine.

Switched from Cox 1000/35 Mbps plan ($190/mo) to Frontier 1gbps plan ($60/mo).

Been so happy I'll probably upgrade to the 2gbps or 5gbps plan because I saturate this one frequently enough.

I switched from Comcast to frontier fiber about a month ago. The tech that came out was great, service has been amazing and can’t beat the price!

As a former customer of frontier I can tell you the customer service is the bad part. Good luck if you need to speak with a person during an outage or on the weekend. It’s impossible to get a human being. And over two months after I cancelled my service I was still getting bills via email. Don’t do it. Just say no.

I switched from Xfinity to Frontier fiber about two years ago. Xfinity overloaded the nodes in our neighborhood which led to extreme instability and network time outs, during the time everyone went WFH.

I went from 30-50ms latency to Google's DNS to a steady 6ms. Huge upgrade. Then about six months later, I had two instances where we were out of internet for 2-3 days. The communication to their tech support was extremely basic, and even after telling them my background in network engineering, it was the usual "turn it off for 2 minutes and back on again". I get it, most people calling for tech support need basic support, but I was also coming off of Xfinity PTSD. Luckily it seemed the issues were sorted out and haven't had an issue since.

So other than the initial hurdles of getting it installed in your area, it's been great. The mixed things you've heard about Frontier most likely has to do with Frontier DSL, which is a different section of Frontier completely.

My switch was fast and simple, competent and friendly installer. Switched over last fall. Haven't had an outage yet. It's blistering fast and I'm saving $40/month over the old cable cartel.

Switched from Optimum due to their garbage tech support and service. Frontier Fiber has been great so far. Would have gone with GoNetSpeed instead if they were in our town but they aren't yet.

Yes, we switched to Frontier Fiber 500 Mbps from Optimum cable about 2 months ago. The worst part was canceling Optimum- it took 45 minutes of repeating “I would just like to cancel please” to 2 reps. They got down to 3 months free and then $30/month for 300Mbps cable, if anyone needs to save some money. Next time I will absolutely lie and say I’m moving to Antarctica.

Our Optimum service was dropping 10+ times a day- rebooting the modem was not effective. Speaking to tech support was not effective either. Their best suggestion was upgrading our service, but we really don’t have that many devices. Once I called to cancel, they offered to send a tech out same-day. So if you have issues, don’t bother with tech support, just say you want to cancel.

The installation with Frontier was good. They were scheduling a few weeks out when we booked it. There was no confirmation until 10 minutes before the installer showed up. It took about 4 hours because there was an issue at a neighbor’s electrical pole, but they kept calmly troubleshooting until it was working. We were scheduled for the 8-noon time slot. They arrived around 10 and we had a connection by 2pm.

Added q: is the ip static-ish? Will they block incoming ports like wireguard or traefik?

I have had it since the summer, haven’t had a single disconnection issue and through Ethernet I get full 940/940 every single time. It’s incredible and such a good price compared to what I was paying with Cox. Hope my current setup never changes in this regard

I have 1TB in a pretty remote location up north. I have 23 devices connected. Two work from home and I game on it and it is fast. Rarely has issues and definitely not enough to annoy me. Awesome price. I love it

I was afraid to switch to Frontier after everything I've heard about them but made the switch last summer and it's been rock solid since. Haven't had to deal with customer service though.

Glad to say goodbye to Charter with their speeds getting slower by the month and rates going higher.

I switched from Xfinity a few weeks ago, it's been 100% of the promised speed and 100% reliable so far. The installer was also nice, and sharp. No complaints.

Same experience here. Long call with Optimum. We actually called optimum and asked for a price match before we had Frontier install. They said no. $90 for 200 mb/s.

On the second tier of cancelation (after Fronteir installed) reps at optimum offered to match the price. Sheesh. We siad too late, Frontier is already installed. I asked them "Who actually cancels without a working replacement already set-up."

Ended up getting the 1gig for 65/mo total, came with 150 visa card and $10 off/mo YouTube TV, free install. We don't need a gig, but it comes out cheaper for the first year. We will probably drop to 500mb/s after a year.

Installer was great and didn't leave the nasty trail of ugly wires Optimum installed. The tech actually removed all of the old phone/unused lines. Install outside looks professional.

I am getting around 925 mb wired and high 800's wireless.

YouTube TV is way better than their crappy cable/dvr system.

The only downside I see at Frontier is that there seems to be longer hold times for support after install.

If you have Optimum, maybe go to the 2nd tier of cancelation and price match the internet.

Two weeks so far in WV, and haven’t had a drop yet. Hopefully it’s just end user and not the equipment. I’ve heard from some engineers on /r/frontierfios and they said the backend isn’t even being TOUCHED yet on utilization, so we should see good service for some quite some time still.

I switched from Xfinity to Frontier when I moved up north. I grabbed the Gig Fiber plan, and honestly haven’t looked back. Service is great, and I’m paying a fraction of the cost I paid for Xfinity Triple-Play service (Their surcharges are straight highway robbery)

The only thing thats not great is their Support, they take forever to schedule an appointment. Some genius decided to run through a utility pole in my neighborhood, took the power and internet out…didn’t get Service to replace the modem until like 3 weeks later.

They refunded me for the outage, and argued that they don’t have “enough techs for support”, which honestly baffles me considering the demand for Fiber in CT

We switched from Xfinity to Frontier last spring when they installed fiber in our area. The speed and consistency is infinitely better than Xfinity at a fraction of the cost.
