We have a small rat problem and I have to confess killing them is a bit depressing. They're just doing their rat thing. But I guess that's just the way it is.

No it wasn't a novel. I'm trying to remember, it was someone, maybe an anthropologist? Anyway their takeaway was that they felt that the man, who they spend time with, had so much cultural knowledge that he was more able to live/survive/thrive in the world than someone in an "advanced" culture. (This isn't quite right but you get the idea.)
I think it was part of some kind of research into human adaptation or something. I think he had studied multiple people.
Wish I could remember.

I don't remember if I read it or heard it on the radio but there was this description of a man going hunting for honey and he would whistle or call and this bird would show up and lead him to a tree where a hive was. The bird didn't have to deal with the bees and got some honey.

I recall something like an "empathy suit" being used to clue in some cohort like young designers to the problems of disabled or elderly people. It essentially was a suit designed to make it hard to do ordinary things from a physical stand point. I'm not sure how you could create the equivalent for "tech" but judging by a lot of the comments here I'd make sure everyone had to wear it for a week.
