I agree. The road is a bike lane. Intentional swerving to be more noticeable is a lesser known technique. Cyclists probably think it's dangerous or too aggressive, but my life is on the line, so I'd rather be where drivers can see me.

The library, Haven Kitchen on Temple St across from the movies, the deli on Orange St across from Elm City Games

I work in food service so I have lots of practice. I've thought about this myself, but never followed through. Maybe because of it being right in front of me--but, the result is that my Spanish is very much noun-centric and useless outside of a kitchen.

Online classes plus being in a place where everybody speaks it would do a lot. You might not need formal classes. Check Craigslist, there might be some tutors there.

I'm 28, grew up here, went to high school here, but have connections to NYC where I was born and have also lived in the suburbs. I find New Haven interesting, fun, yet a bit expensive. And when you find the places that aren't frequented by Yale underclass-folks, you'll notice a very artsy, progressive, and weird vibe that is really cool. When you come, check out Never Ending Books on State St.

Gateway is decent from what I hear. I'm not a college grad though so what do I know.

The library is a great resource and there are ALL types of people here. It's a Connecticut thing, we have literally everything.

Good luck

Second/third floor apartments are often safer and quieter. 2k can get you places but probably not Wooster. Maybe East Rock.

Bump to small streets in the dingy parts of town. Portsea, Greenwich, Rosetta, Atwater, Peck, Haven, Main St (Fairhaven)...

If you drive, then check surrounding areas for affordability. East Haven, Foxon area, West Haven Hamden all have nice spots (and not so nice) and each have a bus line or two going in and out.

Take your time and check frequently. as you find listings, try posting again asking about specific neighborhoods.

I manage a rental and did it on Craigslist. A kind woman from Tennessee video-called the apartment tour and moved all the way here. It worked out.

Which is to say, try to get in touch with the posters and exercise good judgment, whether or not you're using Craigslist.

But yes it's expensive. Try Fairhaven Heights (east of Quinnipiac River), West Haven, or upper Whalley, going towards Westville and Woodbridge. Fairhaven in general is also fine in most spots, but loud and there are kids who try car doors and steal bikes.

You're moving in. There are specific "cons" you will want to know about. Here's my take:

  1. Tweed air traffic is very loud and low-flying. Few times a day.

  2. Prowlers. Kids that walk around, try your car door, and check to see if bicycles are unlocked. Install a motion activated light.

  3. Loud cars. It's part of the vibe.

  4. Places you should be cautious of. AKA welcome to human society.

I've lived on Downing St for six years and I bike to work downtown, shop at C-town, and I love it.

Does anyone know whom to ask about hurrying up and fixing it? I don't think the drink kids should be arrested... Nor the whole group blamed ... Obviously not nice behavior, but I bet it was one or two kids desperate for attention or trying to impress girls.

As someone from New Haven I can say this is not new. Imagine the time and money Yale pours into maintaining their properties, after damage done by students or otherwise. New Haven will have to do the same because people suck.
