From what I see on Zillow you'd spend about 1500 on a 1 bedroom apartment, another 200 on electricity, then car payments and insurance (400????), cell phone (50??), and you'd have about 1150 left for food/clothes/stuff/fun/savings per month.

Some people are mentioning Oakland Beach. I moved to RI a few years ago, and I'm a bit surprised that it hasn't been bought up by property developers yet. I mean, we're talking about relatively cheap real estate, surrounded by marinas, on a little peninsula surrounded by the water, with a beach, 10 minutes from i95. The air traffic doesn't really go over it, and right next to it are the mansions of Warwick Neck. It's 15 minutes to downtown Providence, and an hour to Boston.

I see this as an absolute win. Rhode Island might be depicted as the tiny boner of the east coast, but at least we're on the map. MA, ME, CT, NH, VT, NJ, PA, KY, NC, DE, GA, TN, SC aren't, but we are.

Keep in mind that the trend is for sea levels to rise, and storms seem to be more frequent. That will impact the cost of your flood insurance, and the resale value of your house over time.
