Moby Dick is one of my favorite books, but it is not an easy read. It's written in a style that is evocative of Shakespeare.

Hegel assumes a high amount of knowledge of early 19th-century German philosophy, and many of his technical terms are untranslatable. He especially loved compound words.

David Copperfield is a great book, and yes it's a long read. It's full of pathos, colorful characters, and many different subplots that rise one after another. But it's a slow-paced novel.

Reply to Have you ever read a book so good, that rereading it is physically painful? by CreepyTarot
No Longer Human by Osamu Dazai is a great book, but I had such a visceral reaction to it while reading it that I don't dare reread it. It somehow hoists the feeling of alienation on to its reader.
The Setting Sun by Osamu Dazai didn't give me the same visceral reaction, so it must have something to do with Dazai finishing No Longer Human right before he committed suicide. Maybe when you're so close to death you write in a different way.
