During WWI Germany was under blockade and in the winter of 1916/1917 came close to famine. It became known as the turnip winter, because that's all that was left for poorer people.

They are very expensive, you normally only go near them when you're in trouble, and let's face it, in every court case there's a loser who thinks it's unfair and it's easy to blame your or the other person's lawyer for it.
