I can name only two popular fantasy books I have read without sexual violence against women. Some time ago someone in the fantasy reddit asked for a book without sexual violence and many people recommended books that in hindsight turned out in fact have sexual violence.

Why are you surprised by that?

Ever seen a movie? Violence against women is portrayed as normal in movies. Especially, sexual violence. We are all indoctrinated to think it is normal. You do not know how many people I have met who told me GoT is a realistic depecition of the middle ages and how it could not have been written any other way. Or look at House of the Dragon: Alicent Hightower the original character is an unpleasant step mother figure in the original source material and very unlikable but the show writers only managed to come up with one way to make her likable to the audience: by changing her age to 15 when she marries 40 year old Viserys in the show compared to how she was 19 in the source material and married 28 year old Viserys. And in the source material she was not raped. They added a rape storyline for that character with the only purpose to make her more sympathetic and every time I bring up the fact I get downvoted and called an idiot. Ironically, the same people threw a hissy fit when Sansa was raped in the show universe.

That said: I have no issue with Alicent being portrayed as more sympathetic but hat could have done without making her a rape victim or maybe maybe the author did not want Alicent to be portrayed as sympathetic because people like her exist in reali life. Women who help men to suppress other women, who slut shame other women for not obeying the patriarchy laws. Foord for thoughts.

Her books are not hated. Many people love them. Just because some snobs on the internet hate it and dudbros who do not want any romance in their fantasy stories but call a guy aka Rotfuss the second coming of Tolkien for writing a thirty page fairy smut fanfiction does not mean they are bad.

Says someone who did not even enjoy the only book I read from her, but for sure there must be something in the books that makes people like them.

I hate the term guilty pleasure. You ought not to feel guilty about enjoying something that does no harm to anyone.

I read a lot of classics but also silly mangas as a teenager and I would never regret reading them lol

Sometimes, I still re-read the childish mangas and books I loved as a child: Dragon Ball, Yugioh, Eragon, Harry Potter etc.

Her writing simplistic is the very reason people like her books, though.

I also think your "People who really enjoy reading" comes off as very arrogant. Some people might have not have the time to read as children because other duties kept them away from it, some might no have been encourged to read and are only now developing that skill and might feel intimidated by the big classics. Some youngsters might read the books because of Tik Tok but where I live they are often bought in the English Edition and here it helps that they are simple because they can improve their English Skills while at the same time read an entertaining story.

Anything that gets people to read is a good thing in my opinion and should not be looked down upon as "mindless thrill" but a book like any other.

It is not the duty of the writer to educate their readers about good and bad relationships.

And her writing about it might just be from her experience of people actually romanticizing toxic relationips in real life and her trying to capture it. Ask any person in a toxic relationship....and many of them will tell you that they love their partner or father of their child despite the abuse. Abused children are often the same. Human actions often do not make sense and I think writers ought to be allowed to capture that without being labelled as problematic. Now what I have a problem with are the covers of her books. They make the books look like typical romance books. It would be better to sell her books as something different.

Also many people who read her books do recongize they are toxic. A friend of mine read some of her books and said "She really captures the toxicity well." She had two boyfriends who were utter toxic. The first one was a control freak who isolated her from her friends and later became a creep and the second one cheated on her because he assumed they were in an open relationship.

Her books are easy to read....that is why people like them.

Not everyone wants to read super long Tolkien books. That said I still think they are fare too overhyped.

Watching TV is bad for me but reading makes me tired. I once did it a whole month without watching TV and it was best sleep I ever had. I could easily get up at 5 and I had no problems falling asleep. I honestly did not even miss TV until I started watching again. It is really weird. I wonder how life was before the Internet and TV. I can only recommend anyone to exchange reading for phone activities or TV stuff.

Depends on the kid. Some kids are more grown up than others. I read full blown smut when I was 13. I only got the borning and akward talk from my parents. So I had to educate myself.

I honestly do not think it harmed me and think it is better to educate children sooner on sex than later. Books can be a great way of doing that. And I also mean by that books with problematic stuff like rape, unconsensual stuff. I think if parents talk with their children about such stuff portrayed in media it can help them handles this stuff better in real life.
