Maybe it's me, but the weather and the general vibe in Washington is depressing.

Yes, I am currently listening to "Tracks of My Tears" by Smokey Robinson & The Miracles on repeat. :)
Put on some Kool and the Gang and have a dance party, you can add joy to your life
I just got back from 5 weeks in New England and have been thrilled with how much sunshine there’s been. It’s all relative!
New England needs its own time zone, because it is an affront against God and nature for the sun to start setting by 3:45 in December.
Having moved from Boston that’s one thing I absolutely don’t miss lmao
There was talk awhile back about moving the part of Mass that sticks out to the Atlantic time zone. I would make a straight line up the east coast and every part that sticks out past Bal’mer gets booted to the Atlantic time zone.
Agreed, makes DC seem like a tropical paradise. Thanks for sharing.

I use a sunlamp pretty regularly to keep up with the gloomy weather.
Cheer up. Things could always be worse.
The weather lately has been gray, but I think we often forget how lucky we are to live in a city like DC. You're surrounded by monuments and museums. There is always some cool or interesting event to join in this city. And you can meet cool people if you keep an open mind and just be open to being friendly.
And if that's not good enough for you, DC gets really colorful when the cherry blossoms bloom!
Come to the other big city in Washington (Seattle) and talk about gray and gloomy - you will get no objections
Good point!

It’s always interesting when there are like two days of gloom or two days of a chill and people start saying things like “It’s always gloomy ans cold here!!”
This area is one of the sunniest and warmest I’ve lived in, even during the winter. As for the people, maybe you’re just around the wrong crowd. Most people seem to be relatively happy here.
People will complain about whatever they can and blame their mood on anything but their interpretation of what is around them
Good point. Much of suffering is self-created, and most of the time, individuals have the ability to transform themselves and the negative thoughts they may have about situations occurring within their life. Depression adds a whole new level of complexity, however.
I’m from Chicago where it is generally 10+ degrees colder than DC year-round and the sun disappears for like 5 months straight in winter. Seasonal depression there is real. Today’s weather sucks but it’s one day and mild. I’ll gladly take 40s in January
It was 52 today, in January! A great time to get outside and enjoy the city.
Born and raised here, moved away for 6 years. Can’t agree even in the slightest
No you’re just emo. Try living in Canada! Dc is awesome
Ha ha. Good point, I could never live in Canada! Power to you!
I live in DC now thank goodness
Not accurate, but I definitely turn into a grey person in the winter. Saving vacation days for winter (long beach weekends in the summer instead of a full week) and splurging on warm winter clothes that I actually like helps a bit!
Good idea to take a vacation in Winter!
No. I never thought that when I lived in DC. It’s a luxury to be able to take the metro to the national mall and simply walk around. Or the ability to go to a Smithsonian (postal is my favorite). I used to run to the Washington Monument from NW. And the restaurants that are often just in walking distance…Even now, living in the suburbs, I simply take it for granted the monuments that are so accessible to us.
You are who you surround yourself with. While easy to be surrounded by miserable people in DC there are also many many interesting and vibrant people that call DC home.
No lol
No, that's ridiculous.
Boo
Maybe you should move.
It's you.
...you're just depressed, get some exercise.
It’s fair to say any major US city is fun unless ya suck .. so seems likes it on you
Laughs in Michigan lake effect overcast. 65-75 clear days a year average, can't have shit in Detroit.
Ya, I guess it can always be worse. I used to live in Buffalo, NY! Lol.
Yup my freshman year in college in SE Michigan we had over 70 straight days without sun. It was awful.
Lol wait until summer
Yes, until then, I'll be,
California Dreamin’

take a trip to seattle my guy
Right I'm sitting here like sir you have the wrong Washington
ha, spend february in michigan and then let us know how yah feel
No
Welcome to January.
NAAAHHHHHHH it seems to me that all the people moving here for jobs or career are just now getting a dose of reality and upset they aren't in college anymore. so they are lonely and whine a lot.
you make your own life, its not where you live its how you live.
Nah, I’m actually enjoying my life currently.
Ouch.
Nah, I can’t vibe with this perspective of DC. Coming from upstate m, NY where there just was a huge snow storm, I love the mild winters here and even the cloudy days. I mean it is January, lol.

That sounds so sad! I think of Seattle people like this more than DC
Maybe you should get a pet.
Good idea, I used to have 2 elderly dogs but they passed away last year. Now I have a cat, though not quite the same. :)
I was feeling similarly about life and this city as you described in your post. Now I have a puppy and I have several pleasant interactions with strangers every day and it has definitely altered my perspective for the better.
On the flip slide I just bathed my princess for the 3rd time in 3 days because she rolled in poop AGAIN on our walk in the park today. So it's definitely work, but I'd say it's worth it. It's not like I was spending my time productively before, and now at least I'm out walking a couple hours a day and talking to people.
Awesome, ya, dogs are a lot of work, but they get you outside interacting with folks. Thanks for sharing, and take care!
You too, bro.
Hope I never fix my typing fingers ro be this dismal about anything.
Yes.
That’s how I felt when I worked in a windowless office and commuted surrounded by a depressed crowd of people all dressed in black or grey coats.
Now I work from home and feel the sun on my face most days even in winter
Not going to lie, when I was young growing up in NOVA this is what I felt. I distinctly remember that everyday felt cloudy and grey. Was lucky enough to live in Atlanta, Chicago, SW Virginia, Southeast PA and never really felt that same feeling in any other location. Now that I’ve moved back to DC though I really only notice/despise the constant humidity in the warmer months. All this to say that I think it’s relative 😂
weather?
My friend and I unironically refer to this city as the City of Gray.
No
Girl who said that? Have you seen Stonewall Kickball where it’s just one endless running weekend/open air college campus for three months?
Ya, it could be seasonal affective disorder. About 10 million Americans suffer from Winter depression from what I've read. It's no joke.
It has hit me super hard this winter. I’ll go through weeks where I’m my typical chipper self, and then wake up one day an absolute miserable ass. Actually didn’t even occur to me that it was likely SAD, until like last week.
Ya, likely it is SAD, thanks for your comment, and take good care.
Hit me softer that I feared this year but still has me feeling more sullen than I’d hoped. Still, I’ve come to appreciate how easy it is to find things in DC that can cheer you up during the wintertime.
Ok, there seems to be a SAD connection here. FYI, I checked my weather app and the next 9 days are gonna be cloudy or rain (only one day will be sunny-Friday). Hello Seattle weather! Ha ha.
Is it accurate to [makes a sweeping generalization]?
🤔
I would say so. D.C. is the unseasoned boiled chicken of metropolitan cities.
I agree with OP
DC has its charms but all the homers really overrate it / are annoying
Thanks for that comment. The fans do have this, though... According to the 2022-2023 U.S. News Best Places to Live ranking, Washington, D.C. ranked in the top 20 U.S. metro areas to live at No. 19.
Giving up your own argument so easily, eh?

The original argument was far superior!
