I moved to DMV area a couple years ago (during the Pandemic) and I'm afraid it's made me a bit "lazy" with leaving the house (just in the sense of only doing the same routine, grocery store, coffee shop, etc).

I'm making a bucket list for the year since I've gotten through the "big" museums (and a lot of the items in the guide). I can search for random activities but is there anything time sensitive that I should watch out for (obvious example is visiting cherry blossoms) or anything that most people don't think of?

I don't have a car but can Uber maybe 30 minutes out if it's a special attraction.

Hirshhorn Museum and Sculpture Garden, which is the Smithsonian’s contemporary art museum museum, will close for interior renovations in 2024. so probably worth a visit if you haven’t already in 2023. the museum will probably be closed a couple of years during the renovations.

They’re gonna close the whole thing for a couple years? That seems like a lot. Are their some structural issues or something?

It’s an estimate, but yeah. This isn’t really that unusual. American History was closed for two years due to renovations too and Air and Space had rolling closures over like 6 years. No structural issues I know of but this is the first renovation in the museum’s almost 50 year history. According to dcist they’re trying to modernize the building and especially switch up the entrances given attendance is way up.

Suppose that makes sense, but the Hirshorn exhibits are a lot simpler for display purposes than most of the other museums, so still seems hard to believe.

For Cherry Blossom Festival I'd highly recommend timing it to see the kite festival. It's super cool to see so many in the air around the washington monument.

In general I recommend watching the smithsonian calendar and filtering by 'performances' or 'after hours' for interesting events.

Day trip to Baltimore!

I went to Baltimore as a kid, but haven't been back since I moved to DC. I went yesterday and had a lot of fun. Lots of great neighborhoods and places to eat, and I really liked the art museum there.

Only 45 minutes or so via the MARC train.

Seconding this - Baltimore has some incredible restaurants (I love The Helmand which is Afghan food) and walking around Fells Point is pretty cool

Commenting to follow, since I'm in a remarkably similar boat.

Honestly, just walk around your neighborhood. It's surprising how many things will be gone forever in a year. If you're at all interested in anything historic, just take a look at what hasn't been torn down or remodeled yet.
