I'm heading home to Louisiana Sunday and wanted to grab some things. The last time I was here I grabbed some stuff from the General store in Newbury but I wanna try another place or two to see if they have even more varied merchandise.

I was gonna head to White River Junction and Middlebury tomorrow so was hoping there might be something in that general vicinity.

Since you're passing through Middlebury, stop and see us on Main St - Vermont's Own Gifts & Goods. www.vtsown.com Say hi! Have a safe trip!

Seconding Vermont’s Own as an impartial 3 party (except for the fact I lived above the store for a few years)! It has a great variety of Vermont crafted items and food! And while in Midd you could also check out Sweet Cecile (some local items) and Danforth Pewter. The Midd Co-Op also has a nice range of locally produced food as well!

Yes! Thanks for the seconding! And excellent local recommendations, too!

Another vote for Vermont's Own Gifts & Goods and Sweet Cecily. Middlebury's downtown is too cool.

Dan & Whits in Norwich (two exits north of WRJ and worth it) - huge, authentic general store plus the King Arthur Flour outlet and bake shop is just down the road - loads of cool things to take home. Safe travels!

Just when you think you've seen the whole place you realize there's a whole other back half behind the meat counter.

There's also a steep staircase to an upstairs shoe/clothing room that looks like it used to be a concert hall or something.

Dan & Whits, Exit 13, I-91 North in Norwich VT. Make sure you get into the back area - the part that looks like your grand-dad's old garage. That;s where they keep the best stuff.

Dan & Whit’s be sure you go into the back area too. Not that you’ll find any gifts out there, but you should experience the depth of what a good general store offers.

Wrj and Middlebury in the same day? Really going hard on the “can’t get there from here” experience.

Grew up in WRJ and went to/through Middlebury maybe twice before graduating high school? For me it’s in the same category as, like, Manchester (VT).

3

cheesytreesy t1_j81epgz wrote

How so? It’s like a 45 minute trip

Full_Whereas_2694 t1_j81y2ue wrote

It's easily a 90 minute trip and you have to go over bethel mountain and middlebury gap. It's the same distance as going to burlington from middlebury but it takes almost twice as long to drive it.

Gillingham's in Woodstock is near WRJ and is a quintessential general store for this kind of thing.

OMG I was so excited to give my brother a big ol glass bear of maple syrup for Christmas and his California girlfriend was complaining so much about how the fake stuff is better! Do they not have culture outside of VT??

The Vermont country store(s) may be worth a detour.

If you can make it to Warren, that is my favorite general store in all of vermont. Cozy little nook and a gorgeous drive there.

Ripton country store, since you'll be down in the area

Edit: hit it up when you go over the gap.

And if you go south on 100 to 125 to get to Midd you can definitely detour to the Warren Store in Warren village. Also in Waitsfield there is a local artisan shop on Bridge St.

If they're going to White river junction from Middlebury they are probably heading down 7, and I'm assuming going over bethel/Rochester.
