My wife and I decided to sit down and see who has the best Cashew Chicken in Town, these were our competitors, who do you think won?

I like them all just fine, but my go to is Chinese Chef. Lucy’s cashew sauce might have black tar heroine in it tho… that shit calls to me

I need an answer when you have one- I haven’t tried it yet

I haven't eaten Chinese food in Springfield in like 20 years, but Canton Inn on Sunshine.

benutne t1_jauiy08 wrote

Chinese Chef has the crispiest chicken. The sauce is pretty on par with others, but a good entry.

^ This. I have tried over a 20 Chinese joints in Springfield, including all the heavy hitters, and they are the best, period! They only have one Achilles heel and that is their chicken is not quite the quality you get at places like Lucy's and Leong's. But their sauce is the best IMO. I get their spicy tangy chicken at least once a week.

Lucy's is disgusting and Leong's isnt what it was 25 years ago. Out of these four, HKI is the winner here.

Rough-Culture t1_jaukxva wrote

Yeah, thank you. Lucy’s looks like some hipsters bullshit. Hong Kong inn is like shitty all you can eat quality(and not one of the good all you can eats). You need a hole in the wall spot like Leongs in your repertoire(and I’m willing to bet it’s a close second). But the sauce, quality of chicken and serving size of Chinese Chef is on point. And for those reasons it’s gotta be #1. Bonus points on the egg roll though Hong Kong inn!

Rough-Culture t1_jaul6kz wrote

Pictures alone, it looks awful. The sauce is too thin and soupy. The rice seems to lack any veg or egg(although hard to tell). The egg roll seems perfect though.

EDIT: I’m sorry guys I didn’t realize I was being recd a random city. I thought this was just a person posting in pics.

Honestly though we have so many good choices for it. My family’s favorite has been Chinese chef. But there’s a place on chestnut called New House and it is so good. The place on battlefield by Hy-Vee called golden cuisine is also delicious. Edited to add: the place in Nixa, Cashew Inn, is well worth the short trip from Springfield

Hong Kong Inn holds a special place in my heart from college. $3.18 after tax for the cashew Kitty special.

Its technically not Springfield but I think golden dragon in ozark always deserves to be thrown in this conversation

Jo11yR0g3r t1_jauuobm wrote

Probably chinese chef. Hong Kong is bunk and leongs honestly isn't that great, their general is way better(definitely best eggrolls in town though, hot damn) and Lucy's is super hit or miss depending on the location

Asian Hut and Yum Yum bowl are strong competitors as well if you haven't tried those

Saltpork545 t1_jauze5i wrote

Golden is the spot I hit up because it's close to home. It's not the best I've had but it's legit and decently priced. All of their combos come with a drink. I can drive just backroads and get there and they're open until 930. At 9pm, that matters.

Their spicy stuff is good and straightforward, but very 'Springfield' spicy if you get my drift.

I like Cashew Chef more than Chinese Chef (the food isn't the same). They're both good. I don't like Hong Kong Inn or Leong's. Lucy's is pretty awful.

I want to say Leon's, simply because I imagine they have access to the original recipe. Never tried it though

I don't go savage style with the sauce. Sauce on the side and i dunk it like chicken nuggets. Stays crispy.

synystar t1_jaw2ol6 wrote

Yan's is my favorite. They're in the mall now. They used to be on Kimbrough by MSU. They make it like I remember it when I was a boy from Leong's Tea House on east Sunshine in the 80s. Cashew Chicken has changed since the days Leong invented it, even Leong's version, and theirs tastes the best to me.

2

Divinehatred420 t1_jaw2wtw wrote

These are all low-tier options. Yum Yum Bowl, Rice House, New House, all way better

dobernado t1_jaw2z69 wrote

Used to go to a place called Jade East back in the day. It had excellent cashew chicken. Is this place still around?

I grew up in Ozark and I gotta say nothing in Springfield is even close to be similar to Golden Dragon. Their chicken breading is so crispy and perfect and all of their sauces taste great. I was always bummed when it would flood out every so often because of the rivers proximity.

AndThenThereWere427 t1_jawbtid wrote

Just in case you didn't know, Leongs is where springfield style cashew chicken was invented. David Leong, who invented the dish, passed away last year, but his son is the owner of the restaurant. So i wouldn't really call it a hole in the wall, and I'd hope it was good, considering that all of these restaurants are making Leong's family recipe.

I know everyone has their favorite, but Chinese Chef is my go-to for non buffet Chinese food in general. I'm originally from California, and they are the closest I've found to the flavor and quality I grew up with. I also prefer general tso's chicken more, but I know that's blasphemy out here lol.

rocketboyJV t1_jawff68 wrote

I don't live in Springfield but based on looks I'd go with Chinese chef. They also have a different container from panda express.

Peking House needs to be on this list as well, but from the 4, I choose Leongs. Lucy’s will never be on my list because they only serve all white meat.

3

erinlee1172 t1_jaxm2c8 wrote

Leon’s is the OG, and absolutely so delicious. Their egg rolls are heavenly. That said, Hong Kong Inn and Lucy’s, both on Sunshine are also delicious and fresh, in my experience.

Tristan-Silas t1_jaylt06 wrote

Leong’s for me! Just seeing this post made my mouth water. Ah to be in Springfield right now. St. Louis doesn’t have anything remotely good as Springfield style cashew chicken.

Check out China King if you are looking for something a little broader than usual Springfield Chinese. They have Moo Shu and Singapore noodles for example. Used to have the best pot stickers in town, but that changed a few years ago…

Also RIP Bamboo Inn. The cashew chicken GOAT, at least in my family…
