Glad to see we're getting another one, but very skeptical about getting this place properly staffed considering how hard it has been for VVC. Maybe the competition will force them to pay their staff more.

Money isn't the sole problem with vets. It may not even be the main one. It's a difficult and emotional job where the pet owners often aren't at their best -- especially for emergency services.
When I went to the Carytown vet to put my cat down six weeks ago, there were signs put up everywhere begging for people to treat the vets with respect and kindness. And what did they have to do in my case? Talk about difficult things, walk me through the process, and watch me lose my shit (sobbing-wise) while trying but being unable to comfort me.
The burnout and suicide rates among vets are among the highest of any job. I feel for anyone who chooses to make this their profession. They should definitely get paid more, but I don't think any amount of money suffices for some of what they're asked to do. They do it for their love for animals.

The article actually goes into that a lot. It's heartbreaking all around.

It's pay also. I have a friend who is a vet tech with 20 years experience and she has to deal with end of life care every week. She is way underpaid and could make more money doing just about anything else. They should be paid like nurses but they are not.

This right here...I worked at a vet for 5 years thinking I wanted to be a vet tech...I realized real quick it's not for everyone. I worked the front desk for a while and yea being the person taking payment from sobbing broken people putting their pets down was so heart breaking and hard bit also people truly are at their worst when it comes to their pets. Also some of the things I saw while working there...I will never forget and it's been 10 years. I remember being underpaid, overworked and just emotionally exhaused on a daily basis...the saddest part is when you're so burnt out you start to lose your empathy for people and their sick pets because they waited until 5 minutes before close to bring in an animal that has been vomitiing and not eating for weeks and then you just feel like a monster for literally just being pissed at this person for ensuring you work another 60 hour week because you are staying late...again...
