I don’t even understand how you get to be 6-7 figures delinquent. I once made a mistake on my taxes and owed the IRS a couple hundred bucks and they were aggressive and threatened to garnish wages.

more zeros, less enforcement? Also, probably hard to garnish wages of people who pay themselves.

Because a big business can easily hit those numbers. Def see a concrete supplier with big contracts or investment firms being at the top

And then you have to remember this could be total tax owed over a few years with fees and compounded interest added on. So even for a small business like a gas station or mini mart can easily hit 100k in just a couple of years.

Didn’t the state auction off his house or something?

I'd be surprised if they didn't have to auction off his house for him being a dingus.

I remember he would drive around the parking lot of my school trying to pick up chicks. And he had that fucking Halo on at the time cuz his neck was broken. The guys fucking insane

I mean, a lot of these are pretty specialized companies most individuals would be unlikely to deal with. Without looking into it, I would hazard some are likely former businesses as well.

The Department of Taxation also names and shames the Top 100 individual income tax delinquents.

It's like the old fashioned bounced check taped to the cash register.

Kinda feel bad for some of the individuals. I wonder what the circumstances were that led to owing a quarter million dollars to the state while living in an apartment.

I actually know an owner of one on the business list, and it’s not surprising. Good people but not great with money. I know they almost lost their house to foreclosure at one point.

A surprising number of them also live in Florida.

bzarins t1_iudph2r wrote

I can see why that might happen. Retire or move to Florida while still owning property up here but no longer paying the property tax possibly. If you own significant property I’m sure it adds up quickly. Some people move to Florida to escape taxes.

I guess the same could be true with people up here too, maybe they own the whole building their address is listed at and fell behind on property taxes. I guess it could even be from eviction moratoriums during covid leading to no income to pay the taxes. In which case it would be the government’s fault why the government isn’t getting their money lol.

I noticed some on the list still have reputable businesses / still rich. How? I know someone that went to “jail” for 6 months because of tax evasion.
