Love cheap chicken Monday. This also applied to chicken from the butcher case. I used to get young chickens which were originally $6-$8 for a couple bucks. This was pre pandemic obviously but I’ve seen young chickens for like $10-$12 and on cheap chicken mondays they’re half off I think. Insane deal, super easy to cook (spatchcock ftw) and can feed a single person for 3-4 days
Fushinaz t1_iydeqyj wrote
I didn’t know that they also have the chicken on sale in the butcher section on mondays. Thanks for the info!

Absolutely. If you're not in a rush, grab some sweet peppers and D&W hoagie dressing on it and they could sell it for double.

I would've assumed the beer/wine at Acme, and the fresh meats/produce would at the very least put them ahead of Wawa.
PS: some of the prepared foods at the supermarkets are decent...I'd happily take a Giant/Acme pre-made hoagie over the travesty that Wawa hoagies have become
smug_masshole t1_iy92i1c wrote
It probably did. You're comparing the revenues for 303 stores to revenues for 67 stores and they're a rounding error apart.
RJ5R t1_iya34jo wrote
Giant has a great combo price for hoagie, chips, and soda. It was $7, then became $8, now it's $9. Still a solid deal. The hoagies themselves are meh, but they at least have taste. What Wawa did with their hoagies is downright shameful. It's straight up cafeteria food
IPA_lot_ t1_iy8xjuo wrote
Totally forgot about the beer and wine. Hmm that is interesting.
Agreed about the hoagies. Wawa has gone downhill. But their spicy Italian panini and the chicken salad club is still great.

The sales are totals, not per store, and Wegmans only has 9 locations compared to Target's 37. Per store, Wegmans has $77 million vs Target's $23 million. Giant is at $43 and wawa is $7 million per store.
illy-chan t1_iybbwh3 wrote
Yeah, Wawa has by far the most locations of any chain listed here. It's no surprise that those would add up with more than 4x the locations Acme has.
zwinters57 t1_iybhy5w wrote
Wawa sucks ass. I remember when I was young, before they were a huge company, their hoagies were delicious. They had real lunch meat not water injected rubber. Everything they make taste like plastic. It's hard, if not impossible to maintain quality with so many locations. Also sad to see that they are number 3 in food sales...no wonder everybody has cancer.
mbz321 t1_iyd7pgq wrote
Not really that surprising. This chart is the 'Philadelphia market', not just in the city itself. Giant and Wegmans have pretty much chased Acme out of the suburbs...Philly itself (and NJ) are their real strongholds. A lot more Giant stores and Wawa's in the burbs. If the chart was only looking at Philly, Acme would probably be #2 after ShopRite (just a guess).

Giant has expanded in Philly these past few years. There are new, full-sized stores on Broad and Spring Garden, the SRT and Race, and on Delaware Ave in South Philly. Including the Heirloom on Market, they have some great locations for big sales

tigerlotus t1_iy9513p wrote
Also, it's by sales. When I go to TJs and walk out with a couple of bags, it's always like half the price as getting (what seems to be) the same amount at Giant. Not to mention the amount people are buying at a Giant/ShopRite/Walmart vs TJs - I see over-flowing carts for big families at Giant and more conservative hauls at TJs (albeit the selection is more limited).

In my opinion, the Giant near me is one of the worst supermarkets that I have ever been in and Giant is atrocious as a company, overall. There's a Stop-n-Shop about 10 miles further away but it is absolutely worth it, both in price, quality and overall mental well-being. I could go on and on about all the reasons I hate these stores, but most other stores share the same anti-labor, anti-consumer practices. It's just that Giant leans all the way into making their stores extra uninviting.
