From start to finish, if you had it all to choose from, how would the day go? Let’s assume money is no object but nothing crazy like buying the Dream Garden or such like.

What’s the coffee shop of choice?

This is breaking my heart as I type this because I'm leaving Philly in a few weeks, but:
A 2nd perfect day would involve taking going up Kelly Drive to the Wissahickon then some more exploring around in Chestnut Hill. I love this city.
This is an amazing answer. Thank you!
I’m sorry to hear you’re leaving. Your love for this place runs deep. Where are you going and why are you leaving?
You hit all my favorite walking spots!
Definitely left out some favorites like Race St Pier, Italian Market, Passyunk Square, and Fairmount Ave. But you can't fit it all in one day huh
Shit, are you me? I do this exact same walk every week. I live next to the Wiss and just take the bus in (9) so I can hang out in old city.

I had my perfect Philadelphia day one Sunday in Autumn back in the 80's. My GF (now wife) and I lived in Kensington. We got on the El at K&A and took it down to Girard Ave. We got on the trolley (I don't remember the number) and rode to the zoo. We spent a couple of hours at the zoo and then walked to the Waterworks, to the Art Museum steps, down the Parkway and got back on the El and went home. Back then Center City was fairly deserted on a Sunday but it was very pleasant all around.
What was Kensington like in the 80s?
It was always considered a rough neighborhood. I grew up in the Far Northeast and moved in with my GF in Kensington. She bought a house for $12,000 that was between the Tioga and Allegheny stops on the El.
The neighborhood had a bunch of elderly people still living there. Mostly Irish and Polish. I worked for the phone company at the garage on 2nd and Erie. Kensington Ave was a thriving business district. Ostroff's Candies, Bea's Broasted Chicken, Village Thrift. On hot summer days I used to go to McPheson library to read because they had air conditioning.
In the early 90's Crack was the big drug. There were Crack whores would hang out alongside Harrowgate Park.
Overall, it wasn't bad. Much better than today.
I look up our old house on Zillow every now and then. It's strange seeing the changes to the interior. We had a claw foot bathtub which has been replaced by a regular tub enclosure.
When and why did you leave and where did you go?
I was working for the federal government and got transferred for work about 1994.
Out of philly?
Yes. Baltimore, and I enjoyed that city as well.
It might not sound too extraordinary but yesterday was such a beautiful day to take my pup to Kelly Drive. It was truly perfect.
Kelly Drive is extraordinary and taking one’s dog for a stroll there even more so.
Cute pupper
thanks. he knows it
I think my ideal day would be to wake up early and go birding at John Heinz NWR near the airport, drive home and take the bus to the art museum area and get some lunch at a cafe like maybe Sabrina's, then hit up the Franklin Institute or Academy of Natural Sciences and spend the afternoon there. In the evening see a concert at Union Transfer or Underground Arts and then some drinks at Prohibition Taproom or Yards or something like that. But I also love walking the trails in Wissahickon or biking along Kelly Drive, or going to the zoo, or kicking a ball around at Lemon Hill. On a nice weather day there can be so much to do.
In your ideal version, who’s playing at UA or UT?
...buuut if we want it to be Philly-themed, I've always wanted to see Japanese Breakfast
The pain I feel having not gone to even 1 of jbrekkie's like 5 show run at UT....
Right?? I literally had just moved back to living in the city a month sooner and didn't know it was going on, big sad. Maybe we can get another run one of these days
In my perfect world, probably Passion Pit. They haven't been terribly active since the mid-2010s and haven't done a show since 2018 but a man can dream.
I live in Fairmount, and nothing compares to walking down the neighborhood to the Parkway, to Rittenhouse, for the farmer’s market in the early fall, grabbing bites to eat here and there and enjoying them in the park while people watching.
Or, my fiancé and I used to do what we called “procurement day” in Italian Market, where we’d specifically order ingredients from small businesses in the area and enjoy bites from places like South Philly Barbacoa between our pickups. Then go home and cook together.
Or, hiking around Forbidden Drive with a stop off at Valley Green Inn or the Cedars House Cafe.
Damn… this city has really grown on me the past few years, for all its problems.
That sounds truly fine.
Do you have a favorite on drugs area of the museum?
European Art 1850-1900, where all the Impressionist paintings are. Runner up is the Japanese tea house.
Not OP but the modern art section and I also like the armor area
Damn that sounds rad as hell lol.
Sleep in a bit. Hit up Rittenhouse farmer's market and get a baked good for breakfast to eat while sitting in the park. Walk to the SRT and watch the dogs at the park. Stroll Filter on the way back. Go disc golfing at Sedgeley. Grab late lunch and drinks outside in Fairmount. Walk down to Center City and wander/window shop/people watch. Dinner and margs at Blue Corn. Casual bar crawl at a few stops in Passyunk. Ice cream at Milk Jawn. Bed by 11:30.
Favorite spot in fairmount?
For casual lunch probably bishop's collar or Zorba's
Wake up mid week, I'm off work. Happen to have cash on me so I can get a pistachio croissant from Artisan boulanger patisserie. Take a stroll down the avenue, pop into rivals and get a latte. Chill at the fountain for breakfast.
Take a stroll up to center city, go the scenic route thru all the tiny side streets between 10th and broad between Lombard and spruce. Stop for another coffee at last drop, continue my stroll up towards fittler sq and take a walk on the catwalk to dog watch. Walk along the SRT and contemplate how happy I am not to be stuck in the traffic across the river. Enjoy the view from the south st bridge.
Head back east, probably get more coffee ( I have a problem). Sit and enjoy it while chilling at St Peters church yard ( beautiful flowers in spring and summer).
Start south again and cut up to hit the Italian market on my way home, pop into dibrunos and Claudio's and spend way too much money. Window shop at fante's.
Pop into manatawny for a cheeky cocktail once I get back to the avenue.
Head home, make a drink and a snack. Post up on my stoop. Shoot the shit with my neighbors until the streetlights come on. Head in, make dinner, watch something I like with my husband. Go to bed.
Perfect day
I keenly feel the joy of watching dead stopped traffic you’re not in.
Go to either grindcore house or the tasty and then go to Dickinson square park or Columbus park to eat and drink my coffee. Go to bar bonbon for lunch and hang out in Rittenhouse square. Then for dinner, I'd go to triangle tavern and get some drinks with friends.
Nothing really that I don't already do. I'm a pretty simple guy.
Simplicity is elegance is brevity is wit is beauty.
Thank you
-No barking from the dog
-No smog
-Mama cooked breakfast with no hog
No murders.
Please yes.
Waffle cone from Jeni’s while walking through Rittenhouse Park on my way to Vibrant.
I’m easy to please tbh
Get a bagel at spread at 16th and walnut. Take a nap. Wake up to a beautiful 68 degree day. Take the dogs for a long walk on the river trail. Get lunch somewhere outdoors on Rittenhouse square- parc or via locusta. Sit in Rittenhouse. Walk down to doggie style and look in the windows at the cute dogs who need to be adopted. Hit up a happy hour- maybe black sheep. Get an early bite to eat and call it.
My wife and I are also leaving Philadelphia in a weeks after living here for 35 years for the Hudson valley. My ideal philly day would be coffee at Ultimo in grad hospital, walk to breakfast at Sam’s morning glory. Takeout sandwiches from John’s roast pork and sit at Penn treaty for a while. Zig zag through the city on a long walk with a fat joint, eventually ending up on passyunk for a few drinks and a pizza at birra. Finally head back to my neighborhood and grab a few old Richmond punches and dinner at cook and shaker, eventually meandering home a happy man. In fact, this is more or less our plan in two weeks.
Where in Hudson Valley? I’m from Chatham way back and have occasional swimming upstream to spawn day dreams.
Also, that does indeed sound like a perfect philly day.
Going to the Eagles parade . Sigh
Pastries at Machine Shop (Bok). FDR meadows walk (not as nice anymore I guess). A 76ers day game. BSL up to Chinatown for dim sum at Tom’s. Then drinks and watching people play pool at a bar like Good Dog.
My perfect Philly day would be being able to buy a house at a reasonable price.
Breakfast at The Dutch to an afternoon Phillies game, wander toward center city, stopping for a drink and bite where ever looks good, wander some more, dinner at (I honestly can't decide...TBD), and finish the night with friends at 12 Steps down.
Sleep in, brunch at Sabrina’s (on a day where there isn’t a crazy wait), hang out at the Wissahickon in the afternoon, get dinner at the Valley Green Inn, catch a show at the Kimmel Center, and grab dessert and coffee from Maggianos.
Head up to New Hope

Leather weather and day drinking.
A show at KFN or Fillmore or JB's, then El Bar (or whichever dive is closer) until last call.
No arrests or ER.
Wake up, do it again.
Morning coffee at La Colombe. Early Phillies game in Diamond Club seats, dinner at Zahav. If there’s time/availability - Science After Dark at Franklin Institute. Maybe end the night with some late night pizza at Lorenzos and Insomnia cookies to bring home.

Lounge in my favorite local coffee shop, putz around a local park, grab a snack at Riverwards for lunch, wander around the art museum until I’m hungry again and then arrive for dinner at Vedge
Exactly what I’m doing tomorrow
