No sympathy for anyone involved in the world cup.

Everyone's known for years about the slave labor, human rights violations, and everything else. If you still participate that's on you.

I disagree. Qatar took over an event that doesn't typically have these sorts of issues. They should never have been allowed to host, but given they are they should be accomodating of the typical world cup crowd. Theres no excuse for being intolerant of the very fans you sought to lure in. There's definitely no excuse for not having suitable accomodation ready. They knew the timing and attendance is way down on what they were expecting given a large number of people are boycotting.

Qatar doesn't really care about any of those things. They bought the limelight and are showing the things they want to show and do care about.

Ya put the tournament in a hate-powered Third World country with an inhospitable climate. I'm not sure what you were expecting.

Yes, much different than the peaceful, tolerant environs of Russia and Brazil.

Calling Qatar third world is not helpful. The country has immense wealth, its citizens have one of the highest standards of living anywhere in the world.

What needs to be said is that it has a slave-based economy that didn't exist in the 20th century. It is completely foreign to the Western world, even as it is just an extreme form of our own economies.

This is only meaningful when put next to the ratio of citizens to non-citizen workers.

arathorn867 t1_ixn0ynv wrote

It's like saying the citizens of the old American south had a high standard of living. It's accurate, and misses the entire issue. Sure citizens have it great when hardly anyone is a citizen.

Wayward_Whines t1_ixnlhoq wrote

This comment has to be a joke right? Of course they have a high standard of living when your per capita income isn’t impacted by low wage workers. It’s easy to do when you have slaves! And oil. It’s a third world country (by the actual definition and by the modern interpretation of the term.).

Inside_Increase_2930 t1_ixn80yf wrote

Ah yes, the country with no human rights, no press freedom, no freedom of speech, offers the best standard of living in the world. Surely!

Somehow I doubt the LGBT+ and female citizens would agree.

Umm... Yeah. That part.

It’s a shithole bro. If you can’t live free, what’s even the point of being rich? Fuck Qatar.

If you were depraved enough to actually support this disgusting, hateful, sh*t show, then you deserve to get ripped off.

More like lies and maliciousness. They said certain things were allowed and then reversed their decisions. Then it was indifference from FIFA in not pressing them to follow their word or they'd pull out.

Barbarake t1_ixnu7ki wrote

This. They reneged on their agreement two days before the World Cup started. And I would bet a lot of money they planned on doing exactly this from the beginning.

By any standard, the only ethical, humane behavior regarding this WC is Boycott. Anyone who, for any reason whatever, did not Boycott this travesty, deserves the worst possible consequences.

The only ethical behavior is boycotting all WCs

sherm39 t1_ixnedv9 wrote

Ultimately, you're right, and as time goes on, only the worst countries will be interested in the inhumane, greed - driven business of WC construction, displacement, and laying waste to communities. But one step at a time.

There is no need to demolish anything or build new stadiums to host a World Cup or Olympics. Countries that don’t already have the infrastructure shouldn’t host it.

International sports are awesome, but FIFA is screwy.

Maybe, but this isn't really the first case of the FIFA board being completely corrupt and overlooking human rights abuses.

I'm pissed that Beckham is involved in this. In the past he has shown himself to be a decent guy. But being involved in this tarnishes his legacy. And anyone else involved. Like Morgan Freeman.
