I'll never understand that perspective from a dense population of (largely undocumented, based on my time in 2017-2019 working on the ACS survey for the census bureau) immigrants

Punching down. They escaped and now shit on others trying to do the same.

Logical answer if not depressing.

I guess "pulling up the ladder" is more apt, but still as depressing. Just despicable behavior.

The ironbound is probably 80% hispanic by now. Portuguese and Brazilians are a minority but when it comes to the bolsonaro people they’re a loud one.
Also in my experience the Portuguese-speaking demographic in Newark tends to be the more well-off, landlord/business owner type. Not the same group as the undocumented immigrants you’re thinking of

It's not just those years. You can find political cartoons from the 1800s of immigrants who just got off the boat & turn around to yell at the people behind them for being immigrants.
But, take the immigrant idea out of it & you have the MAGA movement. Why are a bunch of people who claim they've been left behind by their government choosing to elect a dipshit who promotes policies that leave them behind even more?
When you feel like the victim, you get recruited someone who can convince you they're strong.
EDIT: Hey, I found the cartoon I was thinking of. Man this internet machine really does have everything!
