What year did movies start to incorporate "post-credit" / "stinger" / "credit cookie" bonus scenes during/after the credits coming on?

I am curious if anyone can think back to the very first movie they can recall watching that had an extra post-credit, credit cookie, stinger, add-on scene halfway through, or after, the credits... Any ideas, everyone?

Per Google/Wikipedia: "A post-credits scene (commonly referred to as a stinger or credit cookie) or mid-credits scene is a short clip that appears after all or some of the closing credits have rolled and sometimes after a production logo of a film, TV series, or video game has run."

The first one I can remember is Ferris Bueller's Day Off from 1986. It didn't become common/huge until the MCU with Iron Man in 2008.

I think Pirates of the Caribbean was the first modern series that made post-credit scenes a staple of the franchise. I think that's the first time it "caught on"

I remember when those movies were popular and people would tell you to stay until after the credits for a surprise, and every installment in the franchise had a cheeky post-credit scene that would reference something from the movie

The first Pirates of the Caribbean (2003) had an after-credit scene that shows the monkey, Jack, sneak back into the cove and steal cursed gold, which was why Jack would stay an undead monkey for the remainder of the franchise

The second one, Dead Man's Chest, returns to the tribe that worshipped Cpt. Jack Sparrow and shows that they're now worshipping the dog that was left behind.

Third one, At World's End, has a post-credit scene showing Will as the captain of the Flying Dutchman coming ashore to see Elizabeth and their son.

It's not until Dead Men Tell No Tales that the aftercredit scenes shift to teasing an upcoming installment though, as that one ends with a post-credit scene in which they tease the return of Davy Jones

Oh I know, I did mention that every installment has one, but felt unnecessary to describe every single one in detail. I decided last minute to throw in the Dead Men Tell No Tales one only because it's the first after-credit scene that seems to tease a new installment, so it seemed notably different to the rest.

Stranger Tides after-credit scene meanwhile is Angelica finding Jack's voodoo doll, but nothing really comes of that in the next installment. Therefore, this one is neither a reference/joke (like the dog worship one) nor a bit of extra continuity (like Jack's immortality or Elizabeth's and Will's child) nor teasing the next installment (like Dead Men Tell No Tales)

It's just a dangling plot thread that they didn't decide to do anything with

I suspect that they probably did have intentions for it, but just decided to clean the slate when the movie underperformed. Usually when they make these fourth entries it's with the intention of starting a new trilogy and that almost never makes it off the ground.

Masters of the Universe had one where Not Skeletor popped out of the lava. For comic book properties, X-Men 3 had Charles Xavier wake up in a coma patient.

Edit: Airplane had one that predates FB. The guy still waiting in the Taxi 🤣

I have seen Airplane, but likely missed this scene as I always USED to skip credits. I no longer skip credits, hence the post. It is funny to think that maybe there are more out there, and we simply do not know because we skipped over them LOL

I had always heard Ferris Bueller as being the first but you're right about Airplane!. Ferris Bueller's was probably the first post-credits scene to break the fourth wall, which is why that one stands out.

Clearly not the first but also around that same era, "Amazon Women on the Moon" has an entire sketch (the one starring Carrie Fisher) embedded right smack in the middle of the credits.

I have NEVER heard of this film before. I am going to check it out this weekend. I love when a plot can still be true/scary 50+ years later (nuclear winters, etc.)

The Matt Helm movies were James Bond parodies. There was nothing scary about the plot.

The original Matt Helm novels, however, are glorious. The character in the books is so tough and unapologetic and kills many people to complete his missions.

I love Dean Martin, but I loathe those Matt Helm parodies.

This. I remember people saying "stick around after the credits, there's a bonus scene". And that's the first time I can remember talk of something like that which was back in 2003 so i'd say they started the modern versions of it at least.

That's probably when they started to become popular, I agree, like as a fad. And particarly among series.

There are plenty of older movies that have them though, as one-off jokes or something. Ferris Bueller's Day Off had one, I know, and I'm sure there were others before that.

I remember when I was a kid Dom DeLuise and Burt Reynolds had a bunch of movies that always had blooper reels during the credits. Cannonball run and I think smokey and the bandit, it's a mad mad mad world?

They weren't exactly post credit scenes, but maybe the uncles to the ones who grew up to be post credit scenes.

I remember seeing airplane in the theater. The credits started to roll and as we got up to leave with everyone else the people behind us said "Their friends told them there was something after the credits" so we stayed. They went back to the guy waiting in the taxi . 1980

That’s the first one I remember (we always watched credits for credits sake — my dad still does and so do I). The second is from The Great Muppet Caper. Gonzo comes back on after the credits with his camera, says “Say cheese!” and takes a picture. Then as he fades out, he says, “I’ll send you each a copy!”

The Pixar movies had “bloopers” during the credits starting with, I believe, A Bug’s Life. I really enjoyed those as a kid.

I really loved the Toy Story 2 “bloopers” when they did them, followed by Monsters Inc. Wish they did them again as it made me think they were actual people seeing it “behind the scenes” when I was a boy.

A lot of the Pixar movies have additional stuff during, between, or after the credits. Cars and Toy Story 3 & 4 have various epilogue scenes during the credits, and most of the Pixar movies from Brave to Lightyear have post credits scenes. (Usually something funny.)

Lightyear had 3 credits scenes. Two joke punchlines (mid and post credits), and a sequel tease literally after the entire movie is done. (After the credits and logos.)

The cyberpunk masterpiece ,Super Mario Bros., had an after credits stinger with Spike and Iggy trying to sell the rights to their adventures.

As a way to tease the next movie, the MCU is really the first place I saw that.

Post credit scenes have been around forever, the first post credit stuff I saw was in Monty Python and the Holy Grail. They put humorous titles and language in the credits.

Yeah, but that was the beginning credits, not the post credits. The movie ended with a blank screen, with music lasting forever.

The Cannonball Run had outtakes/etc. in the end credits. That kept people around watching the credits.

Quite a lot of Disney movies have had some kind of fun thing in the credits - bloopers, a quick scene, a character saying goodbye to the audience, etc - over the years. Frozen has a scene with Marshmallow at the end, a handful of Pixar movies have bloopers, and of course people pointed out Pirates already.

As for not Disney, Planes, Trains, and Automobiles has one of my favorites!

Also there’s actually a Wikipedia page dedicated to movies with credits scenes or audio design. It’s not an exhaustive list as far as I’m aware but it may be a good place to look too. :)

I saw one of the Star Wars prequels in theaters when I was a teenager and my friend and I stayed through the end credits. We were sitting pretty close to the front. There wasn’t an end credits scene but after the screen went black we heard Darth Vader breathing. We looked around and we were the only people in the theater and his breathing was so loud! Terrifying.

James Bond leaves the next movie title at the end. Ever since Marvel did one on Ironman though, every movie wants one now.
