Why do some photos that I’ve assigned as someone’s contact photo take the whole screen when calling me, while some only come as a round bubble. I only use photos that I’ve taken with my iPhone. I can’t figure it out. I want the photos I’ve assigned to come full screen.

But I’m using the same iPhone camera. Most photos are outdoors. It’s not like I’m choosing choppy photos. There has to be a reason

In Contacts app or Phone app > Contacts, at the top left you may find the word “Lists” (iOS 16) or “Groups” (pre-iOS 16).
If you do:
- iOS 16: tap on “All [Gmail/Yahoo/etc]”
- iOS 15 & earlier: deselect iCloud > Done
- those are not iCloud Contacts

I don’t know about you but from my experience, the one that comes as a round bubbles are the ones that’s not hi-res enough to occupy the whole display
