To have honest and respectful discussions about such a challenging topic can be hard in a group where people have yet to build connection. I’ve been in a book club for a little over a year. It’s made up of people who were connected in a loose social network but none of us were really close. Initially we stuck to fiction choices, usually highly regarded authors or well reviewed titles. After we had been together several months, we started moving towards work that was more challenging or just heavier or controversial topics.
