Most but not all cops are bad. I’ve met a few decent ones over the years. They are rare but they do exist.

I know you’re getting down voted, and I understand where you’re coming from. Because it’s hard to take the people that we know personally who we know are good people who happen to do that job, and put them in the same category as the absolutely horrible people who do that job so that they can fuck with other people. It’s a tough place to be when you know a police officer because they’re a part of your life and you have to put them in the same category as all of the shitty people that they work with.
But the problem arises with the good cops, when they don’t do anything about the bad ones. There’s a reason the saying goes “one bad apple spoils the bunch“, because it’s true. And even though you can try to pick that one apple out it’s already made the rest of the apples shitty.

In line with keeping public order? He was plain clothed, not on duty. Cops aren’t constantly on duty, they shouldn’t just be allowed to do whatever they want
i_nobes_what_i_nobes t1_iwqi8tl wrote
And that’s one of the issues we have, which is why we need police reform. Because as you stated, which is 100% true, cops are not on duty all day long. Because there’s an ocean of difference between what this cop did and an off duty officer saving a convenient store from a robbery.
silverhammer96 t1_iwqjv43 wrote
See that’s a term I hate “off-duty officer.” They’re citizens. Normal citizens. They don’t get more rights just because for 8-12 hours a day they put on a uniform.
i_nobes_what_i_nobes t1_iwra0mz wrote
You know, I’ve never thought about it like that. And you’re 100% right, they’re not any more special than anyone else when they’re not working. I don’t call myself an “off duty nanny”, when I’m not at work.
silverhammer96 t1_iwrd7v4 wrote
Any “off-duty officer” is just a cop that’s abusing his position and working overtime without permission from their superior. Shouldn’t be applauded, should be disciplined.

I suspected this would be the outcome as soon as the full footage came out. I think he made a stupid decision to be there in the first place but Rouke very clearly laid her hands on him before he hit her despite her claims to the contrary.
LilahRosette t1_iwo9ufp wrote
But that's the reason he got acquitted, he got off because hitting her was "in line with keeping public order and therefore justified".
8pointstar t1_iwqk7zv wrote
Right. Because she hit the "independent journalist" guy first, then went to hit the cop. The court will give that cop plenty of leeway to restrain her in that circumstance. He was wrong, absolutely. Should have been reprimanded. Could have and should have stopped her differently. But he didn't fly out of nowhere and hit her for no discernable reason
8pointstar t1_iwq9fex wrote
Hearing all the "he beat her up" and "he punched the shit out of her" comments and then you watch the vid and its like what?? Where?? If he had punched the shit out of her, she would have went down, there would have been physical evidence. He slapped her and AFTER she swung at him. This is all politics.

The courts will give a cop leave to do almost anything when that cop is confronted with a riot. More so when the cop is directly assaulted. Agree or not, its worth remembering.
BMorris2526 t1_iwprzum wrote
Congratulations officer. The judge heard the facts in a court of law, not on Reddit, and made a legal decision. Every citizen has that right, including cops.

More progressives and liberals need to carry guns to defend themselves in situations like this. Don’t have to be Tupac to be acquitted in our gun culture.
Beezlegrunk t1_iwpwlta wrote

DankOverwood t1_iwpwyij wrote
When the guy who is beating you in the street has a gun, it’s not a bad idea to have one of your own. I don’t get off on getting punched.
Beezlegrunk t1_iwq203o wrote
So Jennifer Rourke should have pulled out a gun and shot Lugo, who would have pulled his gun and shot her — with stray bullets and ricochets careening through a crowded space and wounding or killing bystanders — before everyone else pulled their guns and began firing.
Brilliant. Problem solved. Because more guns always leads to less death and injury …
8pointstar t1_iwqkomt wrote
Don't have to be Tupac to be shot in the street either. She'd be dead right now if she pulled a gun on a cop. Use your damn head
