Tommy was still the drummer in 77. This has to be later.

It's pretty much a rule on OldSchoolCool that you put a date that makes you look like a fucking idiot.

True that ;p.

If the artwork on the pin wasn't broken i would narrow down the year easier, but overall it looks like em reel display

Also, Van Halen's first album came out in 1978 (Joey's shirt), so it's no earlier than that.

It’s cracking me up for some reason that he’s wearing a Van Halen t.

Slampumpthejam t1_iwvo21f wrote

Why? Bands wearing another bands tee is like the most stereotypical thing I can think of. But you don't wear the tee of the band you're seeing kids.

The_Observatory_ t1_iwvtte1 wrote

And if you buy a tee at the show that night, don't wear it to school the very next day.

2

-ComputerCat- t1_iwz6mcc wrote

Why not?

1

The_Observatory_ t1_ix8r6oi wrote

Because kids are weird about stuff, and they have stupid, arbitrary rules that they enforce. In my middle school and high school, there were the kids who would make fun of you if you wore your new concert t-shirt to school the day after the show. It was considered nerdy and you were considered to be a poser.

AHH, I never have that struggle the band's I go to are too obscure for anyone to recognise

No , I’m quoting from the movie PCU. The lead character tells another cast member don’t wear the shirt of the band your going to see “ Don’t be that guy”

Lol you're trying to say "don't be that guy from some movie no one has seen?" Good one. Got em.

That VH logo was on Van Halen II, 1979.

2

The_Observatory_ t1_ix8rsft wrote

It was, but it was also on the cover of Van Halen I in 1978. The difference between the two album covers is that on VH1, it has the words "Van Halen" right across the VH; and on VH2, the words are above the VH. On his t-shirt, it looks like the logo has the words across the VH, so it's more like the VH1 album cover.

jeepster2982 t1_iww8ctc wrote

Also Van Halen didn’t release their first album until 1978.

Gene Simmons tried to get them a record deal and wanted them to change the name of the band to daddy longlegs. That's more of a boogie rock band kinda name, than a heavy metal band name, though. So they were already on the scene in 77, and Dave had lots of NYC connections from way back. But I don't know if they would have had their own band t shirts already, that was a bigger deal back then. Now you can have everything DIY, make your own album, t shirts, posters, etc. You don't need a big shot like Gene Simmons, hitting on your girlfriends, telling you what to do.

That doesn’t look like CBGB to me and it would surprise me if they had a pinball machine. I went there 25 times, been downstairs, been in the backroom, been on stage; never saw any room that looked like that. Layout of this room alone (with all those doors) suggests it isn’t CB’s.

7

HarraldH t1_iwvza6y wrote

I don't remember a pinball machine either. I was never in the back room though.

112-411 t1_iwy4vvz wrote

What’s the name of the place that replaced CBs? A shoe store? Which was (and maybe still is) decorated w/ all kinds of CBs lore pics etc from back in the day. Essentially a shrine. Anyway, one of these displayed vintage photos showed the Ramones or Bowie or Iggy or (honestly I forget who it was) playing a game. Given the nature of the store one presumes the pic in question was actually taken at CBs. But I dunno.

The machine? Capt Fantastic.

Ramones is the second best band ever after the Beatles. Those two bands rule. After them there’s a five mile gap and after that there’s Metallica. They rule too but only on Thursdays from 10 am to noon.

_WretchedDoll_ t1_iwvkhxr wrote

A fan once told Lemmy that motorhead are only the 2nd best band in the world because Ramones still exist (at the time) and Lemmy agreed. Of course he wrote a song about them which the Ramones later covered, I love both versions.

Don’t recall a pinball machine at CBGB and was there dozens of times. Saw Ramones there 5 or 6 times. Saw Johnny, while playing a white Mosrite (!), slice open his right hand in the middle of a song. Just kept playing. By the end of the song there was a six inch wide pink stripe right across the guitar. 1 2 3 4 right into the next one.
