There's a kernel of truth to that. But you are really missing the bigger picture. If the root cause was "inadequately attentive drivers" in general, you would expect to see this kind of thing all over the area in various parking lots. But you don't. It's just this one specific part of one specific parking lot that has been proven to be confusing many, many times. There is something different about this one.

There are, it seems, conditions in this specific lot which make the consequences of inattention greater, but the root cause of hitting a stationary object with a motor vehicle is driver inattention and negligence.

I'm not sure I agree. It's easy to dunk on Walmart patrons but in my opinion the bizarre layout of the bollards and irregular angles of the lanes are the root cause here.

And if they aren't rubbernecking around their A-pillar blind spots to look for bollards they aren't doing it for pedestrians. Let them pay and maybe learn.

Bollards are a fuck of a lot easier to repair than people, and repairs are cheaper, too.
