It's better than pronouncing it Reecies. As if it rhymes with faeces.

Even in the other way the phrase can be taken, it's true because most wild monkeys don't often come across or eat bananas.

The joke is better if the child is the one who pulls it off on the adult.

But there was this one guy who ate a monkey, or a bat perhaps, and caused the entirety of human civilization to shut down for a couple years. Bananas can't do that

The number of bananas eaten by humans is substantially larger than the number of bananas eaten by monkeys.

The joke makes no mention of the average consumption of an individual and refers to humans (approximately 8 billion) and monkeys (200,000). So each monkey would have to eat more bananas than 40,000 humans for the alternative to be true.

Not all monkeys eat bananas, e.g. the diet of a wild howler monkey is almost entirely comprised of leaves.

Humans eat a lot of bananas, India alone produced 29 million tonnes of bananas last year.

In my opinion, apart from these obviously unimportant shortcomings under pedantic analysis, its a good joke.

xeenexus t1_j96ojv9 wrote

While you’re being pedantic, I’ll be pedantic right back at you. There’s far more than 200k monkeys in the world. There are 250k gorillas alone, and 2.5 million macaques.

Narethii t1_j93me7s wrote

Real talk though, wild monkeys and apes don't eat bananas, wild bananas are fibrous and bitter and human cultivated bananas are too sugary and inaccessible to non-human primates.

So humans do eat the most bananas, more than any other organism

Oh yea? Then you must know that monkeys eat more humans than bananas, mom!

He didn't say per human or per monkey. There are a lot more humans than monkeys so probably true even without the wordplay.

You're not being pedantic, gorillas are apes not monkeys.

Valuable-Pay-5740 t1_j973k7i wrote

To be fair to you, I was wrong about the total, there are many more than 200,000, but substantially less than 8 billion.

If you were being pedantic you wouldn't have inclined gorillas as they are apes not monkeys
