So I recently found out that my Spanish teacher is banned from another school permanently for crimes against a child, when looking him up I found out that he is also a Felon and has been arrested as recently as during this school year. I am afraid of this teacher and no longer feel safe in this particular class, when I tried to speak to staff for my school I was greeted with confirmation of the above information and told that it's not something they will talk about. This just makes me feel even less safe, are there any options for remote high school in CT that will not affect my college prospects? I wanted to start taking college courses my last couple of high school years and am worried my education could suffer bearcause of this. I love my school other than this one huge fear that I am getting no help with. Even having my father call he was greeted with basically a more polite version of "it's none of your business if our staff are criminals" even though it is a public record now. Has anyone has luck in remote high school since the changes the last years? Home schooling is not an option as both my parents work long hours, trust me I asked. Edit for clarification: People have reached out to me, mostly mean messages in DM or threats that if I say the teacher's name I'll get punished. But no I am not going to be dropping out, definitely not. I will be trying to change classes ASAP though. On the other things, yes my teacher is confirmed to be banned from Charles Barrows Stem academy in Windham. He is also confirmed to have 1 relief from abuse order protecting a child from him which seems to be the most likely cause for this ban. He also has a criminal restraining order against him. I do not know which he violated to get his Felony but he also has another charge against him as well. I can not give his name but he told us last year he was turning 36. These things came from repeatedly calling the Putnam and Danielson courts and asking, it was a headache to get these confirmed and they said I'd have to request stuff in person to get any more information. I am scared of this teacher and made sure to confirm it was indeed him before bringing anything up, the hateful mean comments I got make me quite sad. I know I am a young kid but I should be allowed to feel safe in my school especially with these constant lockdowns every week nearby how can I not be on high alert? I am sorry to anyone who my post upset, I did not mean to upset anyone.

So before you drop out over one class… take a different one. Go to your guidance counselor and switch classes. If you aren’t getting a response talk to a trusted subject teacher to have them help you advocate for yourself.

Thank you I get it I'm a dramatic kid, but how would you feel when your parent gets this kind of information confirmed only for it to then feel like a coverup is taking place, I know my school has struggled with the teacher shortage as we are a bigger school but for them to admit it's this teacher then refuse to answer my father makes me feel unsafe, I get it with them ignoring me and my concerns but not him

Look feeling unsafe in your school is 100% an issue. If you are in this persons class and feel uncomfortable I think you have strong reasons to want to be transferred out. Im not suggesting you drop the issue, or accept it, but I am suggesting that you could potentially screw up your entire life by dropping out of high school.

I would suggest you and your parents start going up the chain of command until you get satisfactory answers. School official blow you off? Try the superintendent. They blow you off? School board.

I mean, that teacher is still in the school and on premises, lurking around.

One of those things that if it makes you uncomfortable enough to want to leave the school I’m sure it will still make you uncomfortable and distract you during the day when you’re trying to focus.

This teacher should be disbarred and the reactions they received from the school staff is disgusting and unacceptable

Contact your school board cause they’re the ones in charge of when things go sideways. And start writing your mayor and senators. Sorry, but this is just too vague. People get arrested all the time and are later found innocent. Even more so when this is a domestic dispute. Schools have to follow the laws as well.

What you haven't elaborated on at is how the school is failing to provide adequate protections or endangering your ability to learn.

AhbabaOooMaoMao t1_iu5gd8k wrote

It's not the school's job to disclose personnel information.

Especially since the information that you're asking about here is available from the court.

If you want to find out about arrests or a criminal record, that's who you have to go to.

They may tell you that records of certain prior convictions or arrests are unavailable.

If so, it's because that's the law .

It's important to note here that the Republican plan for schools is to privatize education by supporting vouchers and "school choice."

If this were a private school, and you started asking questions, not only are you not entitled to any answers or due process, they will probably give you a cease and desist letter.

0

MightyMason t1_iu5x8f0 wrote

If a private school was found to have hired a felon, you are literally paying them a ton of money for your kid to go there, so if parents and children were uncomfortable and decided to take tuition elsewhere that school would undoubtedly make a change and respond to the situation.

Unless he is on THE registry, having a teacher who is a former felon isn’t a good reason to drop out. Are there more factors stressing you out than just discovering this teacher's record? I've wanted to remove myself from situations before and pointed to reasons that weren't the true reason. Even if it is your reason, it's still a you problem. The school sees it fit to keep this teacher on staff, so whatever they did probably doesn't bar them from employment so it's just something that you need to work through your problem with. Like other people said, just transfer out of the class.

CT Judicial Website case lookup

Use this website to search for him and find out what the charges were, if any. Search under convictions, then search under pending case. If he’s been arrested in CT it will be there and you’ll see the actual charges although there won’t be a lot of detail. (Edit: you’ll see whether he pled guilty or not, and if the case is closed you’ll be able to see what the decision was and what the sentence was if guilty.)

You can see what his felony is if it was in CT, maybe this will help clear things up for you about whether he is dangerous or not.

If this man committed a crime against children that includes violence or sexual assault, then this should be brought up to your local school board/dept of ed. (this last part is my opinion and if anyone knows better on which agency to contact please correct me.)

**Edit: disregard last edit. OP you’re gonna have to clarify some things if you wanna proceed.

The thing is, none of this adds up. And I know you’ll tell me it does, but I promise you, you don’t have the full story.

Teachers are mandated reporters. If we have even a suspicion that a student is in danger, we are legally required to report it. To not report it is a felony and we could be prosecuted. So, relax. You don’t know what happened, but you are not in danger. If you were the school would be legally bound to remove the individual. Even if you thought it was an admin cover up, I can assure you that teachers wouldn’t simply keep quiet, knowing a dangerous individual is on the staff.

You are leaping to more conclusions than you can count.

And also, online high schools are generally a joke and dropping out will significantly affect your future. Is it really worth it? Get switched out of the class and move on.

Put the paper down and go to school before you ruin your life. For all you know he could have a mental health disease and was in distress at that time. Nothing he did in the past is preventing your learning. When it does, that is when you complain. If you're not trolling, then you're young and have a lot of growing up to do.
