As my grandma always called it “Caldors”.

I never realized it was singular till your comment. Even reading the post, just thinking Caldor’s. I always called them Caldor’s too!

My mother adds so many consonants to brand names it's almost ridiculous: "Lowell's", "Barnes & Nobles", "Best Buys"...

I did too. This might be a Berenstein bears situation, I swear I can picture the sign with an s on it

Caldors and Bradlees were the place to shop back in the day.

Don't forget Ames! It was also a CT-based company, like Caldor. (Bradlees was based in Braintree, MA.)

Right across the street from each other when they were around! Fairfield 90’s when I remember them. I feel like a k-mart was close by too…

I was conceived by two Caldor employees who met on the job in the 1980s.

Twenty five years later, their store manager became my store manager at a Kmart.

Now that's what I call upward mobility

(Sarcastic reference to your manager's career path, not a comment on the mechanics of the conception)

It’s wild they shared the lady and kid’s full address back then

alyinct t1_jegfxmy wrote

Even wilder than that is that the lady is just Mrs. Husband’s name, not her own name. Trusted with her neighbor’s toddler but not to have her own first name in the paper.

The majority of people then had their name and address right in the phone book.

A news article seems weird though. But yeah that’s true

That newspaper looks like it was printed on paper purchased at Caldor.

Caldor on New Britain avenue. Bradlee on Park Street and Two Guys on Berlin Turnpike. All vanished

So strange how they publish your name and address back then

Anyone else remember the Amazing Store in Manchester?

I sometimes think it was a figment of my imagination because no one else remembers it.

It was a close-out store that bought stuff when other stores went out of business. It was kind of like what Ocean State Job Lot was, but at least a decade before that.

I still have pictures developed at caldor's wirh the caldor stamped envelope.

I wonder if places we know today will go the way of bradlees, caldor, etc.

I loved the Caldor's in Manchester as a kid. My parents used to take us there to buy a toy before we went on vacation each year. It was even my first job in High school at the jewelry counter.
