This is the only state I’ve lived in where people consistently swerve into the oncoming lane when there’s a UPS truck or other stopped vehicle obstructing their lane. I’ve gotten used to just slowing down when the opposite lane is blocked to make way. Is there some secret law providing right of way over oncoming traffic?
Some ppl lack critical thinking, and problem solving skills to see that far ahead into their future when driving.
Very true. You’d think you’d use a little planning when throwing your car and whole body into oncoming traffic though. Oh well.
I mean you're the one in here asking if you should stop every 10 feet for 5 miles while you wait for a UPS truck to turn onto a different road.
That’s not what I’m asking man. I’m talking about people going full speed into the oncoming lane, instead of slowing down a tiny bit for one or two cars to pass and waiting till it’s clear. Just assuming that oncoming traffic will slow down, so you don’t have to slow down at all, when it’s your lane that’s blocked.
Same with garbage trucks! I was stuck in a line cause this person didnt want to pass the garbage truck. Finally the car in front of me said fuck this and passed the other driver and garbage truck and everyone did the same thing and pass both vehicles, including a school bus behind me.
I expect people to follow common sense traffic rules and wait until the oncoming lane is clear enough to drive around the stopped vehicle. I do it, every single time. I’m not talking about a traffic jam, I’m talking about people going 45 into the oncoming lane also doing 45, instead of waiting 5 seconds.

I learned to drive in NYC, and have seen some incredibly hostile and reckless driving, but there’s something so consistently senseless about this move.
These asshats think that if their lane is blocked, they now deserve half of the remaining surface. They just assume you will slide over in your newly reduced pathway. There's no blaming this on RI, MA, or NY drivers either. It's all on CT and three drivers from NJ.
Just like defensive driving, there is offensive driving. Some people take advantage of those who really don't want to get into an accident. What are you doing to do if they take up your lane, hit em? They know you'll just stop.
I’m sure that works all the time, right up until it doesn’t.
Fortunately those folks exhibit shorter lifespans.
Bold of you to assume drivers in this state care about right of ways
Really depends on if theirs adequate room so that both vehicles can drive through safely, if it’s a wide enough road and both can than it’s fine. If it’s not than you should always stop and wait for oncoming traffic to clear before proceeding.
The secret is improvise driving. Not everyone on the road is the same in skills, time, awareness, attitude, and purpose. If the whole situation can not be adjust, adjust yourself or start coordinating with the surrounding and improvised when safe to do so.
Do not assume the driver on the opposing lane will coordinate an improvising effort. Some people are dimwit and rather collide with you than move over when possible to make room for the opposing lane to continue flowing.
If you're behind the truck, technically, the other direction has the right of way and if they're paying attention they'll give you more room so you can pass too.

Learning to drive in NYC taught me street lines are more of a suggestion than a rule.
I learned to drive in NYC too. Street lines are a suggestion, but the black Lincoln Town Car in the opposite lane is a rule. And that guy doesn’t care. NYC driving is wild, but people usually drive with a little purpose, if that makes sense.
The expected behavior in the oncoming lane is to slow down (not stop), and use the breakdown lane/margin or whatever you want to call it to make room (in the case of a truck blocking half the lane)
In the case the truck is blocking the whole lane, it's typical too stop, wait for a clear shot, and then go, if oncoming cars appear they stop, the next car that would leave their lane stops, and the oncoming cars resume their right off way when clear...
Pretty sure it's an unwritten protocol, but that's how it would work smoothly and preserve right of way. You can't account for people breaking the protocol though, there's always that one guy... People have trouble when two lanes merge to one as well, you're supposed to create a space for a car between every car, and once you get to the merge spot it can be smooth like a zipper closing, but there's always that one guy that won't leave a space and stops traffic in the other lane.

I just wrote about this on another post. I refuse to swerve into a utility pole or hit a parked car because of these idiots. I stay in my lane, slow or stop, and lean on the horn.
CT drivers have no understanding of right of way and are stupid/opportunistic jerks.

Everyone slows down and you kind of take turns. Delivery trucks on a 2 lane road creates one way traffic around them. Be prepared to stop, but if your line is going, then go. Cars should not be expected to blindly follow a UPS truck and stop every 10 feet. You go around when you see a gap, and those approaching should slow and be aware that some cars might be taking their opportunity to overtake the delivery truck.
Like, work together. Stop classifying drivers as asshats for no reason! Do you expect a line of 20 cars to stay behind a mail truck forever?!?
