Hubby and I have bought a new home and want to get high-quality items as much as possible over the next few years. That said, high quality may not always be the best for a few of these things. For example, sheet vinyl. We are looking for the best sheet vinyl and not other flooring options because we have multiple rescue dogs who dirty up the floors all day every day with dirt, fur, and “accidents”. This makes higher-end floors not really a go for us. We are also in Canada so some brands may not be a go for us.

There are probably things I have forgotten on this list but if anyone has any recommendations for brands/sites etc. for any of the following it would be greatly appreciated!!

Kitchen

· Hand towels

· Dish towels

· Food storage containers

· Cutting boards

· Tap filters

· Knives

· Cookware

· Glass Cookware

Appliances

· Air fryer

· Food dryer

· Canning equipment

· Pressure cooker

· Mixer

Large Appliances (Gas)

· Fridge (only – ice maker)

· Stand up freezer

· Washer

· Dryer

*Debating on a heavy-duty set for large heavy items like king-size blankets and dog blankets for downstairs and for upstairs a more gentle machine for clothes*

· Wall oven

· Wall microwave

· Cooktop

Linen

· Bath towels

· Hand towels

· Face cloths

· Sheets

· Blankets

House Building

· Flooring (sheet vinyl)

· Walls (any decent alternatives for drywall?)

· Roofing

Garage

· Floor heating system

· Car lift

Garden

· Greenhouse

· Garden tunnel

· Water catchment system

· Irrigation

Electrical

· Solar panels/system

· Generator

Misc

  • Medical equipment (from ointments to AED's)

You've got to do some basic research first. This list is ridiculous.

Hi. I have been trying to research as much as possible. I'm not sure why the list is ridiculous. I don't expect every person to answer every item on the list. I was hoping that if, for example, someone found dish towels that actually dry dishes, they could share that with me. And just that. Perhaps I should have spelled that out. Live and learn.

Own-Safe-4683 t1_iy5zc7q wrote

Dish towels are not a BIFL item. They will wear out. They will dry better after they've been through the wash a few times. Does not matter if you buy them at the dollar store or Bloomingdales.

Where this group can actually help is if you list specific needs for one specific item and it's better if you are debating between 2 to 3 brands or model #'s.

Hi. I couldn't find a bunch of the things I was looking for in the search, so I took the list I had been working on for the last 6 months and put a bunch of it here in the hope some people were decent humans. There seems to be a few who have been helpful, so I'm thankful for them.

It's unfortunate how narrow and judgmental some people can be but I get it and try to use it as a reminder to apologize when I do the same. I'll keep this up a little longer in case a few more decent people come along, then ill take the suggestions and be on my way.

Thank you

16

spydersweb51 OP t1_iy5qrkb wrote

I get that and apologize. I was feeling that vitriol from others from the moment I posted was unnecessary. I became defensive and thus part of the problem. Thank you for that reminder. Gonna go updoot everyone, even the grumpies. I don't know them and have no idea about their issues etc. As they don't know me and mine. Truly, thank you.

It's not that we are grumpy, it's that some of these have been answered super thoroughly and doing the searches will net you all the super duper in depth answers too. Use Google to search the sub if the search here is not helping. There is some seriously good info you will otherwise miss, especially with a list this long.

spydersweb51 OP t1_iy6dzys wrote

Hi and thank you. I have done a lot of searching/research and it has helped a lot. For example, I was able to narrow down a robo-vac through google/BIFL, etc. Things I could not find or had the potential to be outdated or found a lot of conflicting/confusing answers to, I tried to compile from a list already on the go and memory. That said, I get your frustration. I hope you can get why I perceive some of the replies as grumpy.

Take care

Wasn't trying to be cutthroat. Was just asking if you'd searched, as many of these have been discussed at length.

Cheers.

Hi. I wish to apologize. I jumped on the defensive even with questions like yours, that have no I’ll intent.

I have done a good chunk of searching/research. I was able to find a lot but with the stuff that was on the list I either didn’t find much, found conflicting info, or was worried the info was outdated (meaning the quality of a company has recently ranked). Hope that makes sense.

Quail-a-lot t1_iy5ajtn wrote

Maybe try some searches first? I would run over my character limit answering all that.

Lee Valley and Costco are going to be your friends for a lot of this.

Your disabilities bear no role in:

  1. Not searching.
  2. Asking a 700 part question and being snarky when called out on it.
  3. Asking a question here sans scope....like here's your new BIFL cooktop: https://lacornueusa.com/chateau-supreme

2

spydersweb51 OP t1_iy87xi7 wrote

Pics will take some time but if you really want me to send you some down the road If we purchase anything from there I can.

It looks like my city has multiple stores that “carry” this line so I will follow up with them. The ranges under 10k could possibly work for us but I worry about how easy it would be to get it repaired if there is problems. Any idea if the parts are easy to access? Would a general repair person know how to navigate it?

The cabinets are absolutely gorgeous and would 100% work for the kitchen.

Muncie4 t1_iy8i283 wrote

You can't even buy a new oven door for this for $10,000. That's the point...when you post no details of wanting things, you aren't going to get proper help. That's a stove that costs more than your house likely.

2

spydersweb51 OP t1_iy8qdfb wrote

Hmmm. I was finding them online for 8-60k. It was very helpful though. I love the style and those cabinets!

I would be happy to give more detail. I figured perhaps in error that making 15 plus posts with massive detail in each would be spamming so I combined everything. So far I have gotten a good amount of suggestions and feedback for things that have been immensely helpful.

Would you like more detail of what I’m looking for in a stove/oven? I mention in the original post ( I think?) that I wanted a gas cabinet oven. I’m not sure how much more detail I could give.

I’m sorry my post has upset you.

1

Muncie4 t1_iy9f6xv wrote

It does not upset me, its wasting everyone's time. Here are stove variables:

  1. Gas/Electric
  2. Single/Double oven
  3. Convection or no
  4. Width constraints
  5. Amount of burners
  6. Specialty burner factors like built in grills, ventilation, etc.
  7. Price
  8. Aesthetics

If you want real help online, you need to sort these all out and make a well formed question. And the above applies to almost anything. A question like "Stove, thanks" is as helpful as "Car, thanks"....take the time to form a great question to get a great answer, otherwise you are wasting you and the internet's time.

As others said, this is also what you would get with even tiny bit of own research.

3

spydersweb51 OP t1_iyab7yd wrote

I did research. For example a cutting board. There are a ton of things that came up and I looked into with google/bifl and there was a lot of conflicting information. So I wanted a more recent idea/opinions.

Everyone has their strengths and weaknesses. I thought places like this were where people go to get help from others, share ideas, resources etc. The anger, lack of understanding that not everyone is the same or understands things the same, and need to snipe at others is expected, as it is the internet. I am just trying to not throw the baby out with the bath water, and to work on myself to not fall to the same negative way of being.

There have been a lot of good recommendations and people willing to reach out, even after I behaved poorly. I am thankful for those people and from this point will only connect with those people.

Take care

Niebieskideszcz t1_iyadd5x wrote

OP, you seem very defensive. No need. This is a very helpful sub/community. But if you come here with a list from here to the moon asking for advice on just about any household item, this really looks like you did zero research on your end and it comes across disrespectful for this community. I am glad you got some responses nonetheless. I hope you consider those other feedbacks as well next time you post for advice.

Thanks for caring for some rescue dogs. Be remiss if I didn't mention that vinyl has a lot of nasty off gassing. Maybe consider tile or if it's a concrete slab home just stain and seal the existing concrete.

As for solar that's something that would require a lot of research. There is no one best choice as it depends on end goals (offset existing bill or go completely off grid). You'll need to research local installers directly.

Best of luck with the new home.

6

spydersweb51 OP t1_iy5n5vz wrote

Thank you! I didn't even think about the off-gassing. I like the concrete slab idea but hubby wants to be able to access underneath. Tile...... I know that will be more $ but that could be a good option for what we are looking for.

Thank you for your kindness.

one more thing about the Solar panels. put the new roof on first or look into getting an all in one solar roof. https://www.roof-crafters.com/learn/cost-gaf-timberline-solar-energy-shingle-roof

also before spending money on solar, make your house energy efficient. lots of attic insulation, insulated windows you might even benefit by upgrading your HVAC if it is old.

Otherwise you might end up having to install a much bigger and more expensive solar system.

3

spydersweb51 OP t1_iy5s0n0 wrote

WOW! TYTYTY! lol. I had no idea that was a thing. I will pass this one on to hubby as he will understand it :). We don't plan on off-grid but are thinking of "selling" for credit to the electric company and then using the credit in the winter.

It is an older home but looks like upgrading should be easy-ish, though may take a while to get all the insulation redone. Ill look at holding off on the solar until we can do that.

We just put in vinyl plank flooring last year and it looks a lot like wood. It is not my first choice but we have and will always have large hairy dogs and it is durable and easy to clean. I would get a Rubbermaid floor duster for the dog hair. Works great and quick. This is what we use: https://www.homedepot.com/p/Rubbermaid-Commercial-Products-18-in-Microfiber-Flat-Mop-Kit-FGQ101-20/202229415.

BTW: Kackjelly is right on good quality house supplies. You can't go wrong with Pyrex and Lodge cast iron but there is a learning curve and be sure and learn how to properly season it. Makes all the difference.

Mixer: Love my Kitchenaid stand mixer and a great time to buy it with holiday deals, It will last a lifetime.

Best of luck with you new home and Congrats!
