I left my house once this week to run to the nearest convenience store because I "needed" now&laters and Reese's. No, I want high, I just didn't want my upstairs neighbor judging me for not leaving the house...

Lunch is a Soylent "complete energy nootropics shake" . While I have no idea if the nootropics will do anything, I know the caffeine will. And I'm going to need it. I get to spend an hour in a meeting explaining to people how 429 errors work. Not sure why an hour long meeting is required, I've already explained it half a dozen in times via email. And it's really bloody simple. Sigh. But the money is good!

Solo Thanksgiving. Holiday season blows goats. But I binge watched Wednesday and ate ice cream, so, you know, typical Thursday.

Honestly it's pretty close. I was looking at doing about a 500 sqft house, one big room for living and kitchen, with a bathroom and loft for a "bedroom". Then another 500 sqft building just for an art studio/office. Essentially two of the same building, just one without a kitchen or bathroom. Both 3d printed and container have their benefits, but my happy place is lots of exposed wood and windows.

I rounded up on estimated building costs, and then figured 50k as a good budget for land with trees, though I think that might be wishful thinking for something close enough to Richmond that I can still say I'm "in Richmond". But I came up with what feels like a decent budget of 250k. Ideally, under 200k though. I think finding the right property is going to be a real challenge.

Glad to see I'm not too far off estimate wise. Makes me feel a bit more confident about the entire thing. Thank you, your wisdom is appreciated. And if you have any advice I welcome it!

Is it cheaper to build rather than buy right now? My dream is a tiny house and studio with trees and quiet, relatively close to civilization. I've got blueprints, looked at property, but haven't actually gotten a sanity check from someone in the industry. Pipe dream in this economy, or decent possibility?

And no I'm not wealthy. Single, two good income streams, vet, no kids. Not hurting, but not wealthy.

Hmmm, you must be right nearby. My neighbor across the street was just talking about how her daughters car got ransacked. At the time, my car (right across from theirs) had boxes in it, so presumably would have been a more interesting target. I don't usually keep anything interesting in my car, but if they really want a ratty ass camping chair and a USB cable I'm not going to be too put out.

So far I absolutely love this area. Thank you for the welcome!

Finally getting to explore Woodland Heights, my new neighborhood! Woot!

Also unpacking, putting my bed together, hanging art, making multiple trips to the storage unit, making trips to target for all the crap I somehow don't have, shopping ikea or the thrift stores for furniture I don't have, and actually going to the grocery store for food. Moving sucks.

Looking at the crime statistics for Saudi Arabia as a whole demonstrates just how different the legal system is. This is complete conjecture, but I've got a feeling that the type of crime you're likely to encounter here will be vastly different than you would see in Saudi Arabia, or at least more varied.

In my opinion, having exposure to as many cultures as possible, through travel, should be a requirement for being human. I've gained a lot of both empathy, and respect for humans as a whole because of my travels.

With you having experience in the states already, you won't have a problem at all. The biggest adjustment is just going to be the living alone thing. And there are going to be a lot of people at VCU dealing with the same thing. Develop a support network of friends and you'll be golden.

Oh, and hang around here. There are a lot of cool people that know wtf is going on here. Usually.

Welcome to Richmond!

In the states I've lived in, southern and central California, (including LA), Alaska, Chicago, upstate NY, Seattle, Mississippi (don't recommend), northern VA, Norfolk, Richmond. A few random places for short amounts of time, as well as two multi-month long cross country trips by RV.

Internationally: Prague for a month, Paris, all over Romania, a brief stop in London, a month in Egypt, Bahamas, Puerto Rico, Vancouver BC. When flying internationally, if I can, I try and extend my layovers to a day or two so I can scope out the nearest city. So I've had a bunch of little stops in between.

Where in the world are you coming from?

I've lived all over the country, and traveled the world. Richmond isn't bad at all. The reason you're seeing posts here about crime etc, is because most of those events are the exception rather than the rule. Their uniqueness makes them worthy of comment. Use a reasonable level of caution, learn the city, if something seems unsafe don't go there or do that thing, don't go clubbing solo and get smashed, use your turn signals, don't throw things at the cops, respect the possums. You'll be good.

Can confirm. I've been in tech for 30 years. Ask someone, if they can't give you the information you need, ask them who might be about to help. At the very least it will show that you're being proactive. And keep notes about who you talk to, could come in handy if you're still learning the org and the associated areas of responsibility.

Okay, while I haven't taken the bus I'm a long time, or even in this city, but wtf?!?

I am genuinely curious, do they do some weird peak hours/dynamic need system without an actual schedule? I didn't notice anything on their site. I haven't been a regular bus person in nearly two decades, and that was on the west coast, but I honestly can't fathom a transit system that doesn't run with regularity... So many problems here.
