It was erected in 1992 to commemorate Hidalgo as the first American city to be invaded by an aggressive strain of African bees that resulted in public panic. BTW Hidalgo was a Mexican Catholic Priest born from Spanish parents that started the Mexican Independence from Spain, when that part of Texas was still part of Mexico...
