Consistency. It is easier to understand maps if they are all orientated the same way. Otherwise you have to study each map to find which direction it is showing you. That might be okay if you are only looking at one map, but gets confusing if you are looking at several maps.

Reply to comment by Doesnt_Matter_TA in ELI5: What’s car alignment? I read that cars should have it done regularly as part of their service. by LittleLostSadDeer
Driving over bumps, and general wear and tear, can cause the wheel and tires to not line up straight anymore. Even if they are off a little bit, it can cause the tires to wear faster and make steering a little off. An alignment is when they get all of the tires and wheels sitting flat and pointing in the right direction again.

This should be expected. There was a surge when the Covid lockdowns hit, and now people don't feel the need to replace those relatively new tools.

This has been the premise of a number of Science Fiction novels over the years. It would be a viable idea IF we could get over the issues of getting the parts and fuel up to that space platform in the first place. Mining asteroids and space manufacturing are often part of the equation. Alternative fuel sources or different types of power supplies would be helpful too. We may someday get there, but there are a lot of questions to answer first.

Nothing wrong with them, it's just that some of them are a lot stronger in flavor than the usual American brands.

That was a standard design. They would last for decades, because the contacts did not wear down. My grandfather's house had one of this design that kept working for 60 years.

Or the left top. It doesn't really matter in the long run, as long as the sheet fits.

I recall an article in National Geographic long ago that in part talked about a gold fry pan. I don't recall if they talked about the non stick part, but they did say it transferred heat quickly and evenly and was good for making eggs. It was melted down after their experiments with it.

Reply to does anyone know how to trim styrofoam? by friggityfrogg
Exacto knife blade is a little small, and gets dull fast cutting through both the paper and the foam inside. A snap knife, the kind with extendable blade that you can snap off sections might work better. Use a pair of pliers to snap of the end pieces of the knife as it gets dull. That or a razor blade knife might be better. The hot wire cutters are great for just foam, but would do nothing for the cardboard on both sides.

Reply to comment by Soory-MyBad in eli5: Why do seemingly all battery powered electronics need at least 2 batteries? by OneGuyJeff
Can it be done, yes. Has it been done, yes. Is it worth doing in most cases, no. Lots of devices have been produced that used proprietary batteries. And they are a pain. I had 2 different wireless land line phones that used different battery packs that were basically 2 or 3 batteries wrapped together. I had to special order a new battery each time. It is much simpler to just use multiple standard batteries.
