You can compare based on caped investments. Actually renewables are getting really competitive in that metric but even then, energy intensity of fossil fuel sources is really high.

1 windmill or solar panel has infinitesimal (very small fraction) total energy compared to an oil well. The logistics/ supply chain has already been built up and developed. There’s a really strong economic incentive for oil and gas incumbents to want to preserve the status quo, even if it could be detrimental to humanity as a whole
