Reply to Maine Central Railroad Maps by amdtrains
there are a couple of places:
https://bostonmaine.squarespace.com/mecvalplans Maine Central Valuation Plans
https://digitalmaine.com/archives/ Maine State Archives
https://www.loc.gov/maps/collections/ Library of Congress

Another place to look is to search for Sanborn Maps of the area you are looking for - most were done between 1880s and 1930s, but only "urban" areas, like Dover-Foxcroft or Skowhegan or such.

You might also check the Penobscot County Registry for the valuation ("val") plans on that stretch - I know they're in there, but it might take a bit of digging.
https://penobscotdeeds.com/ALIS/WW400R.HTM?WSIQTP=SY00

ETA: you might also check with a local survey firm, or the Maine Society of Land Surveyors.

You are correct - minimum of 10 acres for current use plus 1-2 acres of curtilage to qualify.

Look around Farmington, New Durham, Barnstead, Pittsfield - they are out of the way enough to not be prohibitively expensive but still far enough south to be close to the seacoast, Concord, the Lakes region & the mountains. They're mostly Zone 5.

Reply to Hiking Mount Eisenhower via Edmonds path as a hiker that never hiked in the winter; is this a good idea? by Zestyclose_Thanks_96
As an experienced winter hiker, going up Eisenhower solo without adequate gear or prep is foolhardy at best and suicidal at worst. There are many other areas to start off with (as mentioned above, Pierce is a great starter).

I sold my house there last year, moved to NH in 2019 to take care of my dad. OTES was really good for my kids.
Yeah, there were two meth houses not far from us that were raided in the past few years, and a couple of sketchy areas, but I felt safe enough to let my kids bike to school most days & let them run around down the park without helicoptering.

Bangor area and surrounding towns are awesome - I miss living in Old Town.
Houses are considerably less expensive than York County, but depending on the town (Hampden, Orono, Veazie) can be pricy.
If you are okay with the boonies, being across the river (Eddington, Bradley, Milford) is much less expensive, while still being convenient to Bangor and Brewer.

To piggyback on what everyone has said, an older Old Town 17' will be your best bet. I've got a 14' royalex that's about 40 years old & its the best.

can confirm. Moved back to NH from Maine in 2020, got an instant 30% raise, and no state income tax on top of that.

I've worked outside in Bangor at -20. There was a span of 3 weeks in 2014 (I think) where it was never above 0.
If OP is used to the coldest it gets being 60, I want them not to suffer needlessly, if they can avoid it.

The average winter temperature in Massachusetts is 25 F. The average winter temperature in Maine is 9 F. Also OP mentioned moving from the tropics - STFU and go back to Boston.

Going to add to everyone's suggestions - spend the extra for a good pair of boots. You'll want ones that are waterproof, insulated, and 1 size larger than normal, to fit an extra pair of socks. Keeping your feet warm and dry will make you much happier.
Also a good hat - I prefer a knit wool watch cap, because it stays warm even if wet. But a coat with a hood is a good idea as well.
Number one thing to remember though - stay dry, and layer up. If you sweat, as soon as you start cooling down you will be very, very cold if you can't get the sweat away from your body.
If you have questions, let me know - I work outside year round.

Corroborating evidence, as I wasn't sure you would accept the BBC. Figured the writing was more your education level.
-
Never said anything about Hitler, I was discussing republicans who self describe as Nationalist Christian. If you re-read the article, with comprehension this time, you might see that.
-
Both Right (conservative) and Left (progressive) can be authoritarians - look at Mussolini vs. Chavez. But go ahead, tell me how republicans wanting to control women's health choices and people's sleeping arrangements is small government.
-
But the conversation is moot, both the idiots lost.

Not every Republican is a Nazi, but every Nazi is a Republican. How many democrats was it again arrested for seditious conspiracy & attempted murder on our elected officials? And how come none of the Republicans elected in 2020 declined to take their seats if the election was so fraudulent?
Also, calling themselves Nationalist Christians (or Nat-Cs, if you will) doesn't exactly make me think they are trying not to look like Nazis.

Yeah, it would be nice if morons like you knew what you were talking about.
Ever notice that the people flying Nazi and Confederate flags only go to Republican rallies?
From Mirriam-Webster: Fascism: 1often capitalized : a political philosophy, movement, or regime (such as that of the Fascisti) that exalts nation and often race above the individual and that stands for a centralized autocratic government headed by a dictatorial leader, severe economic and social regimentation, and forcible suppression of opposition.

Not so. There is something called Duverger's Law that basically states that in a FPTP/winner takes all system, the "optimal" solution is two parties - smaller parties get absorbed into whichever is closer to them, because their chances of winning and modifying the behaviors of the two major parties increases.
If you want to get more parties, switch to instant runoff or Condorcet or another form of proportional representation.

Just got my truck at McGovern's in Nashua - best deal I've seen in a long time, willing to work with me on my trade-in, really friendly and responsive. It was also the cleanest truck I've ever seen - like it looked right off the showroom even though it was 2 years old.
I'll probably go back there when I trade this one in for an upgrade in a couple of years.
EDIT: I've got a 2019 Nissan Frontier - its on the smaller side for pickups, but I love it. Its the perfect size for 99% of what I need to do, gets decent gas mileage, and rides wicked easy.

An action to quiet title just means there is some ambiguous portion of the deeds where they can no longer find the heirs (usually because some idiot lawyers refuse to update the deed descriptions). Generally it's just because they want to refinance and the title company won't sign off until they take care of it.
