I would love to plumb the 18,000 BC shoreline for settlements.

What’s nuts is that in the 18th century, military spending was around 30% of GDP for many countries.

Reply to Saudi Arabia Takes Control of AR Pioneer Magic Leap in $450 Million Deal (Report) by LegitVirusSN
Oh man, I worked for Magic Leap when the Saudi Crown Prince came to visit and give us his infusion of cash. It was fun and games until a few months later when the Khashoggi killings happened, then I was like, well, we’ve got a very uncomfortable bedfellow here.
Also, Rony seemed like a pretty devout Jew, so it just goes to show that all’s fair when it comes to money.

I don’t necessarily not believe you, but citations would be appreciated.

Yes, Bill Gates weighs as much as a small cow and is a drooling mess with a VR setup strapped to his face. The billionaires of the world today absolutely prove your thesis wrong. Even Kanye has enough to never work again, but there he is, tirelessly making a fool of himself and providing the world entertainment.

Reply to TIL love is as strong as illegal drugs. When you fall in love the same part of your brain is stimulated as when you take mind-altering substances like cocaine. by Canes-Venaticii
I remember when I was dating my now wife, the first three months were sleepless dopamine marathons. I remember thinking very distinctly, “This is not sustainable, I have a life to live, every iota of time is going into this.”
Been together 10 years now, life is quite a bit more sustainable at this point.
The teens/20s were mad, just hopping from dopamine fix to dopamine fix, I can’t imagine how insane mixing all that with drugs must be.

In 09 I was in Beijing in a newly planted forest. Probably about 10 years old, about 10 feet between each tree, all planted in perfect rows, no undercover, just trees. Lots of people walking through it as well, like it used to be a road or plaza or something. Really strange because even though you’re surrounded by trees, you can see forever down the parallel lines…
I don’t think it was a carbon sink or anything, it probably was planted to hide something along the way to the Olympic venues or something, but I’ve always been struck at how odd a manufactured forest is.
