Ran down there this morning and turned around because it seemed like an accident waiting to happen. It was insanely packed with cars—and while some of the drivers were trying to leave a lane (or at least a few feet) open for foot traffic and cyclists, the other half were abruptly swerving into any open space to try to get around the bumper to bumper traffic. Half the cyclists were going the normal direction even though traffic was reversed. Just a total clusterfuck that was dangerous and not enjoyable to anyone and that could have easily been avoided if they’d just shut down everything past the golf course to cars.

I haven’t run the Pacers’ DC half marathon, but it’s on a very similar course to the old Navy half, which is a scenic and pretty fast course. I’ve run a lot of other Pacers races and they’re always well run events. Do be prepared to suffer in the heat and humidity if you pick something in September, though.

Do the 100% free DC Christmas walking tour:

  • Start at the Botanic Garden (since that closes at 5 pm most days and this is best enjoyed when things are lit up at night)
  • walk over to the Capitol Christmas tree
  • walk over to the Canadian Embassy Christmas tree
  • walk up Pennsylvania Ave to the White House Christmas tree
  • the White House has some fancy hotels with decorated lobbies nearby that you can pop into as well
  • optional add-on since it’s slightly out of the way: hit Union Station after the Capitol Christmas tree for the giant wreaths and the big Norwegian tree.

I can’t wrap my head around why they decided to leave pedestrians and cyclists in lanes with just paint to “protect” them. I get that it’s cheaper and faster to just paint new lines instead of actually changing the infrastructure, but the consensus from the public comments was very clear.

Obvious end result: One of the assholes who always drives 50 mph around Hains Point is going to come up behind a driver actually going the speed limit and decide to use the new unprotected “bike and pedestrian lane” to pass them, thereby maiming and/or murdering everyone who happens to be in their path.
