The simple solution is to post your land. You can still offer permission to those that ask.
When you post, remember that you need to post signs at all corners of the property as well as every 400 feet. Additionally signs need to be updated annually and you need to register your land with your town clerk’s office and pay a $5 fee. The town clerk registration needs to happen annually too. It’s an onerous process here in VT, but it is what it is.

Reply to Those of you who have laying hens, what do you do with the chicks who turn out to be roosters? Is there a local butcher who will dispatch them for a fee? I don’t mind eating them at all but don’t have any experience doing it myself and wouldn’t want to cause undue harm due to my inexperience by JMChaseArt
There are a number of mobile butchers around who will do it, but they usually have minimums (25ish). If you’re going to keep birds, you’re better off learning the skill because you might need to do it on a moment’s notice.
