have seen things that I'm pretty sure were spaced based on the hammer length. All evenly spaced, just at no interval that made any sense.

Not a fan. Anything relying on an O ring to seal it is going to fail eventually. I do copper plumbing with fire, and if that isn't an option it gets PEX or PVC.

^^ exactly this. Just from experience, make sure absolutely nothing that isn't a turd or turd paper goes down the toilet. Makes for the big sad when you have to pull the pump and clean or replace it because it couldn't chop whatever went down the drain.
