I could tell early on in your story that Madeline wasn't a real person. Maybe you did absorb her in the womb and she tried to make you acknowledge her within yourself.

There are many strings crisscrossing each other, like a cats cradle. Did your wife really know about your affair? Did you do more than kiss Katy? Did your wife turn cold and distant when you became obsessed with Katy? Was it Serena, Katy, or something else which called the aging monster to you?

Kirby isn't responding to the knocker in a happy way. Keep Kirby and ignore the knocker. Even if it's Kirby's former owner, it's no longer human - perhaps putting up a cross will deter the knocker from bothering you two.

I know I'm late to the party but I'd like to recommend Daniel wear ear buds when he's sleeping so he can't hear the scratching then he might not scratch himself.
