if the horses were large enough to ride, chariots would be a pointless waste in battle, which in fact they were by Roman times.
Sniffy4 t1_jbd2yk1 wrote
interesting, because if you look at the horses pulling chariots in paintings from the battle of Kadesh about 3500 years ago, they are clearly much smaller than modern horses; would be like riding a pony

Just because some chips get through doesnt mean the ban is doing nothing. I dont think China will be able to easily outfit many huge data centers with tens of thousands of latest Nvidia chips to enable AI surveillance of its population, for instance.

bans are still useful in that China will not be able to obtain them in unlimited quantities as they otherwise would

True on its face, but what is the alternative to democracy that produces better results?

I was never at best friend status, but 'not gonna tell em I got married' seems like the red line you draw between long-term friends you value and 'friendly acquaintances'.

I feel like this when a long term long distance friend doesnt bother telling me they got married. OK, guess I'm out.

Reply to comment by saltyhasp in Mastodon—and the pros and cons of moving beyond Big Tech gatekeepers | Standards-based interoperability makes a comeback, sort of by Hrmbee
Once you get to a certain scale it will be impossible for a single person to handle that task, especially if they are trying to do it on a part-time unpaid basis. A big social media company like FB employs large teams to handle moderation issues in all regions of the world and many different languages, as well as AI to detect problematic posts. It's a huge job.

The thing is, once Mastodon reaches critical mass it will have harmful-content moderation challenges like every other platform, but no revenue base to fund handling it; it's all on the lone instance maintainers to do that work.
