Maybe you could try short stories? It's quite different experience from reading full novels and may help your brain to get gradually use to longer format again.

Beren and Luthien from "Beren and Luthien" by J.R.R.Tolkien. Couple that fight together stay forever. Their love is so strong and beatifuly written that I can't even be envious of it.

For me, flowery language isn't a problem. I'm more turned off by graphic, clinical sounding descriptions.

The term smut usually refers to sex scenes.

Rilla of Ingleside by L.M. Montgomery. First book that confronted me with the idea of military drafting and posibility of losing a sibling.

Thats pretty early on in comparison to others. Some us politicans still didn't want to allow catholic judge to be in supreme court few years ago.

A World Apart by Gustaw Herling-Grudziński. It really give you perspective on human psyche in extreme circumstances as well as to what ends human can go to survive. The most horrific thing is the fact that it was complitly based on real events.

They look pretty disfigured, though. I wonder if they suffer or will suffer from some specific health issue related to the mixing.

Reply to Do you ever try and read certain books at a certain time in your life to maximize your immersion? by foulbeastly
Yes, definitly. I like to read books with similar weather and seasons I am currently experiencing.
My favourite experience however was when reading Middlesex by Jeffrey Eugenides, after returning from big family gathering. Themes of family relations and generational differencess in the book really spoke to me at that time.
