Reply to Why has plowing in CT gotten so bad? by schlasara
I feel like the first real storm of the season is usually weird and has messy cleanup.
Some street plow drivers are also local contractors, not DOT employees. It’s a seasonal job that’s had no work this year, wouldn’t surprise me if that had something to do with it. Also, there really has been a nearly across the board reduction of the labor market. My town had a lot of people retire early during the quarantine. They replaced many, but they don’t have experience yet. Was talking to the city supervisor about it last year after they destroyed a bunch of ornamental shrubs by mistake.

I worked in a retail computer store in the early 90’s. The owners didn’t give a hoot about weather - state is open? We are open. The number of guys who would show up to buy random unnecessary items was huge. Never expensive or enough to justify staying open that day, but always a bunch of weirdos who decided that THAT was they day they needed to buy a spare $10 mouse or a CD Cleaner.

I’m all for reform, vote accordingly.
How does that help someone, right this instant?
I do not think it’s a false dichotomy. That implies I could choose to have US medicine reform and choose not to.
And while some people actually do advocate killing others, I’m not. I’m speaking for myself, in a situation where survival beyond days is impossible but hospitals will still incur huge charges. And I’m also not talking about “no heroic measures”.

I want as much dignity as I can keep when my time comes.
I do not want to saddle my family with crushing debt generated in my last few weeks of life.

I can’t answer the question, but constellation was very popular here for a little while because they had a lower rate than that. I definitely would look for reviews online of any supplier as some of them will try to scam you.

Reply to Connecticut labor law question re: preemployment background check costs. Can a prospective employer require the candidate to pay for the cost of the background check if being requested? by Hilfloskind
I don’t think it’s crazy for him to pay for the security guard certificate as he could use that anywhere.
It seems bananas to me that they would charge him for the background check. I could see if it was something along the lines of “if you fail, the background check, you’ll be responsible for the fee “ but this doesn’t feel like that.

I just remember them getting made fun of, mercilessly - and then whenever you'd talk about any other musician, there was a "do they sing or lipsync" for a while. I was really young when it blew up.

When it's low volume outages, the predictions have a reasonable chance of being correct. When it's a high volume of outages, I can't imagine they can predict it with any real accuracy at scale.
I'm never being an Eversource customer without my own generator again. Which is f'ing ridiculous in and of itself.

Definitely opens up more possibilities.
I was referring to amount of land in my post but depending on what you like doing, that may not be important.

Your money will go a lot farther east of the CT river.
I like New Haven as well - stuff to do and amazing food options but you may find you have a much smaller property than you'd like.
I was blown away at how much land I could buy in Eastern CT vs. Western CT.

Reply to How Do You Clean Your Leaves? by MongooseProXC
May not be helpful if you can't tow it, but I use a zero turn mower towing a lawn sweeper. My driveway is lined with a Beech and 8 Sugar Maples and I have a 250+ year old Oak next to the house. Mowing over the leaves so they're confetti then sweeping them in the same pass was an absolute game-changer for the amount of time I had to spend on leaf pickup. It went from a dreaded chore to a 2-3 hour task.

Freeze it good and solid.
Let it thaw for about 25 minutes.
Drop it into a huge cook pot filled with boiling oil.
Clamp on the lid quickly.
Leave the house.

Reply to Studded tires by [deleted]
In order from worst to best (Not all tires listed)
Summer tires
Normal tires
All season tires
Winter/Snow tires
Studded tires (legal in CT from Nov 15 to Apr 30)
Most people only need All Season tires, or Winter tires if they're driving in bad weather. Studded tires are absolutely better than winter tires. In CT, if you are not required to drive in bad weather, I wouldn't bother with them.
Source: Time in VT on Canadian border, having driven both with them and without them. The difference is huge, especially if you're encountering ice.
Driving slow is also very important. Even small cars are heavy and carry a lot of inertia; braking is an even bigger issue than accelerating when you're driving on snow and ice.

Two years ago there was a 140 foot, 10’ wide trench dug through there. It’s surprising how much Lawn Science helped. We are on a well, so no regular irrigation, though we did water the hell out of it in 2021. We stopped when the drought hit and it was mostly yellow.
I’m really frugal and it was a tough decision to pay someone to test and treat the lawn but has been worth it.
We mow it ourselves and do all other property care on our own. It’s become a hobby I guess.
