Oh don't get me wrong, my perspective has been very broadened by some of the discussions in places like this.

And goodness knows, life would be very boring if we all agreed. I've just decided that, clearly, this is the wrong forum to focus on AI development.

The concept of 'singularity' is just fundamentally incompatible with the concept of 'intelligence', as I see it, and it's become too exhausting and exasperating for me to keep trying to explain why.

I've accepted, now, that 'singularity' is just the name of this place and the overall prevalent attitude, so the likelihood of multi-modal, non-singular, potentially-AGI-someday AI, as a concept, being taken seriously here, seems fairly low.

Hanging around here to learn about AI seems equivalent to hanging around a Flat Earther subreddit to learn about geography; it might be entertaining, even informative, but the 'education' one gleans from it is dubious at best.

Oh really? Well whining that other people sound 'immature', and being offended by big words, makes you sound about 16, so I'd be careful throwing rocks in that glass house of yours, friend.

I know r/iamverysmart quite well, feel free to post me on there if you want. I'd love to see what it is you think I'm so deluded about.

Yeah, I tried putting up a thing about ChatGPT explaining its own operating processes, and getting it to reason about how its own language systems work, connecting the 'logic' of written language to the 'logic' of the DNA-to-protein pathway.

Clearly it went over people's heads a bit, but instead of asking about it, the whole post just got scrubbed for being 'low quality content', no other explanation offered.

This would have been a little galling on any subreddit, but considering sort of half-witted fearmongering that passes for discussion here sometimes, I was more than a little disappointed.

But c'est la vie, stupid is as stupid does. I'm not gonna pick a fight with the mods about it; it's trivial, annoying nuisance stuff.

The sort of prolix, loquacious, verbose, needlessly sesquipedalian nonsense that I write, but without any reasoning behind it. 'Guff' is trying to substitute creativity and references for an actually-reasonable, intelligent argument. Engineers and business startup people do it all the time, it's their native language 🤣

Except it's not embarrassing though. Yeah, I've had a bit of a 'meltdown' lately. But I get paid time off work and my GP gives me scripts for good meds to manage it, get good sleep and such, so a 'meltdown' isn't as scary as it might be in other circumstances.

This shit right here though? Hardly. Reddit is just a source of writing prompts for me, and the ones here make me too pissed-off and frustrated for my own health. Hence the angry OP.

Sorry if I 'wasted your time' 😅

Philosophical discussions; there's a prevailing attitude that philosophy is just airey-fairey bull$hit, and only the rigid, mechanistic logic of engineering can be taken seriously.

As much as I appreciate this attitude for the incredible things that engineers do for humanity, I think there is more to 'intelligence' than simplistic determinism. But it's hard to articulate it without copping a whole lotta reactionary guff about how 'you clearly don't know what you're taking about', and 'you're making emotional arguments', and, my favourite, 'you're just anthropomorphising'.

I'm just frustrated and tired of it, not declaring a vendetta 🤣
