Many small biotech companies fall prey to predatory powers on the stock market and are basically shorted into oblivion. Which in turn makes it hard for said company to get funding from the appearance of not performing well as a good return. Then the company goes down and research halts and is dead in the water. Not the sole reason but one of them.
