Yeah, I really hope she just got lost/confused rather than intentionally leaving her new family, only to now be returned to them.

Unless they are working towards a named degree or qualification, and the dog people are giving them special tutoring related to that which they would not give to other workers, then these people are just workers and deserve to be paid accordingly.

What makes you say that? IIRC there is no reason to suppose that early homo sapiens were any less mentally or linguistically sophisticated than we are now.
